An Air Tractor 502 can hold 500 gallons of liquid, but you might be surprised by how little of that load is actually crop protection product.

For example, Veltyma® fungicide at 7 ounces per acre combined with Coragen® eVo insect control at 1.2 ounces per acre totals just 8.2 ounces of product per acre.

For perspective, a standard can of pop holds 12 ounces. That means less than one can of pop worth of these two products combined is applied across an entire acre.

And that small amount isn't designed to indiscriminately affect everything in the field. Modern crop protection products are developed for specific applications and specific problems. Veltyma is formulated to target certain fungal diseases that threaten the crop, while Coragen eVo is a selective insecticide designed to target certain damaging insect pests.

That's an important part of modern agriculture. We aren't simply applying "chemical." We're selecting a product specifically designed for the problem we're trying to control, measuring it down to ounces per acre, and applying it at a labeled rate.

The rest of the spray volume is primarily water, which acts as the carrier to distribute those few ounces evenly across the crop.

The right product. The right rate. The right target. The right time.

Protecting crops from damaging insects and diseases helps farmers preserve yield and quality while making the most of the land, water, fertilizer, fuel, and other resources already invested in growing that crop. Those tools play an important role in maintaining a productive and dependable supply of food, feed, fuel, and fiber.

Less than a can of pop. One acre. Specifically designed and precisely applied.

On August 3, 1921, agricultural aviation took flight. ✈️🌾

What began as a single experiment over a grove of catalpa trees in Ohio became the start of an industry that continues to serve agriculture more than a century later. Using a modified Curtiss "Jenny" biplane, Lt. John A. Macready made six passes over trees infested with catalpa sphinx moth larvae, applying lead arsenate by hand from a 32-gallon hopper. The entire application took just 54 seconds, and six days later, less than 1% of the insects remained. That success proved aerial application could protect crops quickly and effectively, launching the agricultural aviation industry.

The footage in this video comes from the 1955 film Agricultural Aviation, capturing the early years of an industry that has continued to evolve. Today, agricultural aviation is still pushing forward with new technology, precision guidance, improved aircraft, advanced products, and data-driven application techniques. Every season, pilots and operators continue finding better ways to help farmers protect crops, improve efficiency, and maximize yields.
