World Gorilla Day was this week...

Sharing nearly 98% of our DNA, gorillas are among our closest living relatives - and encountering them in the wild is an experience unlike any other. After decades of conservation work, mountain gorilla numbers have been slowly increasing, a hopeful reminder of what long-term habitat protection, community-based conservation and responsible tourism can help achieve.

In the forests of Uganda and Rwanda, trekking to see a gorilla family takes patience and effort. But sitting quietly in their presence, watching the expressions, interactions and relationships within the family, is a powerful reminder of just how much we share.

On World Gorilla Day, we’re celebrating these remarkable primates and the continued work to protect them and the forests they call home.
