On this day in aviation history, 1942: The US Army Air Force’s first air-to-air victory!
https://www.thisdayinaviation.com/14-august-1942/
On August 14, 1942 the US Army Air Force’s first air-to-air victory, in the European theater of operations, did not happen where you would expect. A P-40 Warhawk stationed at Iceland attacked a German Fw-200 Condor that was on patrol looking for Allied shipping. The Condor was damaged but not out of the fight. However, a pair of P-38 lightnings led by Major John Weltman, who’s squadron were being ferried from the US to the UK, finished the job bringing the Condor down when one of it’s bombs exploded.

Coincidentally Major Weltman’s P-38 was the first US Army Air Forces aircraft to be hit by German gunfire.
