🌺 Aloha, Dolly. Hawaiʻi will remember you.

The world lost the incomparable Dolly Parton today at age 80 — but many people may not realize just how special her connection to Hawaiʻi was.

Dolly didn’t simply visit the islands. In the 1980s, she owned and extensively remodeled a beachfront home in Portlock, Hawaiʻi Kai, which became known as the Dolly Parton Estate. She even brought a busload of nieces and nephews to Oʻahu for Christmas.

In 1987 she opened Dolly Parton’s Dockside Plantation in Hawaiʻi Kai. The following year, she devoted an episode of her television series Dolly entirely to the islands. “My Hawaii” featured beloved local entertainers including the Brothers Cazimero, Melveen Leed, Danny Kaleikini and Al Harrington. Dolly sang Hawaiian favorites and closed the show at Waimea Falls with the Honolulu Boys Choir.

And her aloha for Hawaiʻi lasted for decades. After the devastating Lahaina fire, Dolly joined Felix Cavaliere on a 2024 recording of “My Hawaii,” with proceeds benefiting Maui fire relief.

From the mountains of Tennessee to the shores of Hawaiʻi, Dolly somehow made everywhere she went feel a little warmer, brighter and more colorful.

Big hair. Bigger heart. An unforgettable voice. And enough rhinestones to light up Waikīkī.

Rest in peace, Dolly Parton.
