A Texas oil field, long believed to be nearly depleted, still hides millions of barrels of fuel.

The Buda Limestone formation, stretching across South and East Texas, has been a steady source of energy since drilling began in 1930, yielding over 204 million barrels of oil to date.

Despite its long history and seemingly depleted state, a new assessment by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reveals that this historic reservoir is far from empty.

Scientists estimate that the formation still contains approximately 12 million barrels of technically recoverable oil and 184 billion cubic feet of undiscovered natural gas, likely migrated from the adjacent Eagle Ford Group, one of the nation’s most prolific petroleum formations.

While these newly uncovered reserves are modest compared to massive giants like the Permian Basin, the discovery challenges the traditional view of aging fossil fuel fields. It demonstrates that advanced geological mapping can reveal hidden energy pockets even in heavily drilled regions. However, the USGS notes that these undiscovered resources represent only a small fraction of what has already been extracted, highlighting the ultimate limits of traditional fossil fuel reservoirs as the energy landscape continues to evolve.
