NFC vs RFID: what's the difference, and why do both terms appear on RFID blocking products?

NFC (Near Field Communication) is a subset of RFID technology, operating at 13.56 MHz with short-range bidirectional communication. It's the standard used by every major contactless payment card, transit card, and FIPS-201 government credential.

When a product claims to block "RFID," it's (if accurate) blocking 13.56 MHz - which is also the NFC frequency.

A traveler's myth worth retiring: "Tap-to-pay is tokenized now, so RFID protection is pointless."

It sounds right, which is why it spreads. Here's where it falls apart:

Tokenization protects the transaction - the actual payment is scrambled. But it does nothing about the 13.56 MHz signal your card still emits whenever a reader pings it nearby. On many cards, that exposed signal can still reveal the card number and expiry date. Two completely different problems. Tokenization solves the first. Shielding solves the second.

What does federal RFID verification actually mean?

In 2016, Alpine Rivers® submitted PolyShield™ polymer sleeves for independent testing under the FIPS-201 federal standard. FIPS-201 governs contactless identification credentials for US government employees.
