At JLS Express, we’re exploring how AI-powered trucks and experienced drivers can work together through our TCP Terminal concept: Transfer, Charge, Pilot.

Our vision is straightforward: an autonomous truck handles the highway portion of a trip, then stops at a terminal where a qualified human “truck pilot” takes control of the same tractor-trailer for delivery into cities, customer facilities, and other destinations requiring hands-on expertise.

Think of a harbor pilot guiding a ship into port—applied to trucking.

We envision terminals that support charging, freight operations, and jobs for skilled drivers, veterans, dispatchers, and support staff.

After more than 20 years in trucking, we know technology is only part of the equation. Experience, judgment, and customer service remain essential.

đźš› SPOT MARKET REALITY CHECK

We keep hearing about trucking companies shutting down, carriers leaving the industry, and capacity coming out of the market.

But here’s the reality:

Fewer trucks alone don’t create higher rates. Demand does.

The spot market is still basic supply and demand. If there are 100 trucks chasing 50 loads, rates stay under pressure. It doesn’t matter how many carriers have already gone out of business.

Rates move when freight demand catches up with — and eventually exceeds — available capacity.

Right now, the bigger issue isn’t simply a shortage of trucks. It’s that there still isn’t enough freight in many markets to create serious competition for available equipment.

When shippers have more loads than trucks available to move them, that’s when the leverage shifts back toward carriers and spot rates start climbing.

Until then, taking more trucks off the road can tighten capacity — but demand is what ultimately moves the market.
