One of the most common questions we hear from travelers at IDA is: “When are you adding a nonstop flight to [x]?” ✈️

We love the enthusiasm for growing our flight options! To give you a peek behind the curtain, here is a look at how new routes and airline service opportunities take shape at Idaho Falls Regional Airport.

Last week, our Airport Director, Mr. Ian Turner, traveled to Chicago for the Airports Council International - North America's JumpStart 2026. This annual event is the industry’s premier "matchmaking" summit, connecting airport leadership directly with airline network planners to explore opportunities that could eventually lead to new nonstop destinations or even new airline partners for our community.

Decisions about where airlines fly are made well in advance and involve rigorous, data-driven research. Carriers evaluate everything from local passenger demand and fare performance to aircraft availability and crew staffing. They also assess what our region offers travelers, whether our current airport facilities can support their operational needs, and the overall business case for a new route. It is a highly strategic process with significant financial investment at stake for the airlines.

During the conference, Mr. Turner met with a variety of airline representatives to tell the story of the growing Idaho Falls region. While these conversations are just the first step in a long-term process, many of the routes and services seen at airports across the country began with initial meetings at events like JumpStart.

We were proud to be in the room advocating for you, and we’re optimistic that these discussions will help pave the way for future additions to services at IDA.

IDA is reminding travelers to check their bags before heading to the airport as fi****ms are on pace to break records in 2026.

As passenger traffic continues to increase, we encourage travelers to take a few minutes to double-check your bags and ensure any firearm is unloaded, properly secured and packed in checked baggage.

When a firearm is detected during the screening process, local law enforcement is notified and screening pauses while the issue is addressed by law enforcement. Depending on the circumstances, travelers may face criminal citations, civil penalties, delays, missed flights or additional screening requirements.

Passengers may travel with fi****ms only in checked baggage and must follow specific requirements. Fi****ms and ammunition must be declared to the airline, packed correctly and follow all necessary regulations when traveling. Passengers should check with their airline for specific information when traveling with fi****ms.

After more than 28 years of dedicated service with the City of Idaho Falls Police Department—and the past three years serving our airport community—we recently said farewell to Sergeant Deede.

Airport police officers play a vital role in ensuring the safety, security, and smooth operation of our terminal each day. From assisting passengers to responding to emergencies and working alongside TSA and airport staff, their presence helps create a safe and welcoming environment for all who travel through IDA.

To recognize his service, Sergeant Deede was honored with a traditional water salute as he made his final drive through the airport—a meaningful sendoff for someone who has given so much to our community.

We are grateful for his years of service and will truly miss his presence at the airport. We wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement.
