Today, the Independence Municipal Airport was thrilled to welcome Kidsville Daycare for a memorable tour. The students received an up-close look at a home-built airplane, learned the basics of how it takes flight, and explored the facility with our dedicated airport staff.

Thank you to everyone who helped create such a fun and educational experience for our community's youth!

🚴‍♂️ RAGBRAI LIII Traffic & Road Closure Info 🚗

Our team of employees and elected officials has been working diligently to prepare a safe and welcoming environment for RAGBRAI LIII on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

To protect the safety of residents and visitors, several temporary road closures and detours will begin on Wednesday, July 22, including impacts to Highway 150, the downtown corridor, and support vehicle routing.

We have designed these routes to minimize disruptions while accommodating the scale of this event. Please review full closure details, maps, and timelines on our website at https://www.independenceia.gov/ragbrai.

Bring the whole family for a behind-the-scenes look at the Independence Municipal Airport during this special open house from 10:00 – 11:30 am. Meet airport staff, explore the facilities, and learn how the airport supports the community.

Stay for a guided tour from 11:30 am – 12:00 pm for an up-close look at real aircraft and airport operations—perfect for curious kids, aviation fans, and anyone eager to step into the world of flying.

The City of Independence will have a public hearing for the proposed property tax levy on March 23, 2026, at 4:45 pm. To view the hearing notice, please click the link at the bottom of this post.

House File 718, passed during the 2023 Legislative Session, requires that a hearing on the property tax rate be held prior to the completion of the budget. The proposed property tax hearing is intended to spotlight the change in property tax levy to be requested by cities each year. This hearing must be held as a stand-alone meeting, with its own agenda and minutes. No other city business may be on the agenda or discussed during the meeting. In addition to the published notice, the proposed property tax hearing also requires a notice to be mailed directly to each taxpayer on March 20th each year. This property tax notice mailer will show the proposed property tax hearing time, date, and location.
