🦞 Day 4: Bar Harbor, Maine — or Should I Say “Ba Ha Ba”?
Blueberry Treats, Fresh Lobster & a Little Coastal Magic!
Oh, Bar Harbor! What a beautiful day this was! ❤️ We had a chilly fall day, but the sunshine was absolutely glorious. This charming little coastal town quickly became one of my favorite stops on our New England and Canada cruise aboard the Norwegian Breakaway.
And yes, if you want to sound like a local, you might as well call it “Ba Ha Ba!” 😂
⛴️ A Smooth Start to Our Bar Harbor Adventure
Our morning started with a smooth and easy tender ride ashore, and we arrived in Bar Harbor early in the morning.
First things first—we needed coffee and a second breakfast! ☕ So, we set out in search of a good diner.
That’s how we discovered Jeannie’s Great Maine Breakfast. It was a small, busy place, but we were seated right away. And since I was still on my Maine blueberry kick, I knew exactly what I wanted!
I ordered the blueberry pancakes with homemade blueberry topping, and they were delicious! 🫐
There is something about eating local specialties while traveling that makes the experience even more memorable. I was determined to enjoy as many Maine blueberries as possible during this trip, and I was off to a great start!
🛍️ Shopping Along Main Street
After breakfast, the shops along Main Street were beginning to open, so we took our time moseying in and out of the little shops.
Bar Harbor has such a welcoming atmosphere, with charming storefronts, local souvenirs, and plenty of opportunities to browse without feeling rushed.
Of course, we had to make a stop at The Pink Pastry Shop for one of Maine’s famous treats: the whoopie pie!
We stayed with our blueberry theme and chose a blueberry lemon whoopie pie. Oh my goodness—delicious! 😋
Between the blueberry pancakes and the blueberry lemon whoopie pie, I was definitely making the most of Maine’s blueberry goodness!
🌊 A Breathtaking Walk Along the Coast
After a good amount of browsing, we headed toward Agamont Park for a walk along the coast.
The views were breathtaking! The sparkling water, the boats in the harbor, and the beautiful scenery made this one of those moments when you just want to slow down and take it all in.
Even on a chilly fall day, the sunshine made everything feel picture-perfect.
This is one of the things I loved about Bar Harbor. You didn’t have to book an elaborate excursion to enjoy the beauty of the area. Sometimes, simply walking along the waterfront and enjoying the scenery is the perfect way to spend your time ashore.
🦞 Lunch at The Fish House Grill
By this point, it was time for lunch—and naturally, we were on the hunt for more lobster!
We landed at The Fish House Grill, where we decided to splurge a little.
We ordered the twin whole lobster along with a bowl of clam chowder. 🦞
Now, that’s a proper Maine lunch!
There’s something special about cracking into fresh lobster while sitting in a coastal town in Maine. It was a wonderful meal and another delicious highlight of our day.
If you’re visiting Bar Harbor, be sure to leave room in your plans—and your appetite—for the local seafood!
🏛️ Discovering Bar Harbor’s History at La Rochelle
After lunch, we took a stroll up West Street and discovered a place that turned out to be a real gem: the Bar Harbor Historical Society Museum at La Rochelle.
La Rochelle is a beautiful brick chateau that was once a 41-room summer home. The house itself is impressive, and inside we found a museum filled with fascinating stories and history about Bar Harbor.
It was wonderful to learn more about the town beyond its shops, restaurants, and beautiful coastline.
I always enjoy discovering places like this when traveling. They add another layer to a destination and help you appreciate the people and history that shaped it.
✨ A Little Coastal Magic: The Land Bridge
And then came another special surprise!
After exploring the museum, we had the opportunity to walk out onto the natural sand-and-gravel land bridge exposed at low tide.
We were fortunate to be there during the window when the tide was out, revealing this unique stretch of land. The opportunity to walk across depends on the tides, so timing is important!
It felt like discovering a little bit of coastal magic. Between the history, the scenery, and the unusual landscape, it was such a memorable way to spend part of our afternoon.
Cruise tip: If you want to visit a natural land bridge or other tidal area, check the local tide schedule before heading out, and allow plenty of time to return safely before the water rises.
❤️ Bar Harbor, You Stole Our Hearts!
All in all, I have to say that Bar Harbor is absolutely beautiful!
We enjoyed the easy tender ride, a delicious breakfast, charming shops, blueberry treats, a breathtaking coastal walk, fresh Maine lobster, fascinating local history, and the chance to experience the land bridge at low tide.
And the best part? We did all of this simply by exploring on our own!
I only wish we had more time there. Bar Harbor has so much charm, and I can easily see a return visit in our future. There is still more to explore, more local food to try, and more beautiful scenery to enjoy.
Sometimes a port doesn’t just give you a nice day out—it leaves you wanting to come back.
Bar Harbor, you did not disappoint! 💙
