Santa Elena Canyon is one of those places that makes Big Bend feel almost impossible.

The Rio Grande disappears between limestone walls that rise as much as 1,500 feet above the river, forming a canyon eight miles long and only about 30 feet wide at the bottom in some places.

But what makes Santa Elena important isn't just the view.

In the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert, the Rio Grande creates a narrow ribbon of life. Fish, turtles, beavers, insects and hundreds of species of birds depend on the river and the living habitat along its banks. The cliffs and rocky canyons provide habitat as well, including nesting areas for peregrine falcons.

Water is scarce out here. Where it exists, life gathers around it.

That's what I think gets lost when we talk about Big Bend as empty desert. It isn't empty. Places like Santa Elena are part of a living ecosystem built around the Rio Grande.

And standing beneath 1,500 feet of limestone with the river reflecting the last light of the day, it's hard to imagine looking at this place and thinking it needs anything added to it. There's so much to lose and nothing to gain by adding a barrier or road.
