Sometimes you just don't have a choice what time of year you move. Whether it be relocating
for a job or another significant life change, you may not be able to choose a warm, sunny day to
move into your new home. These helpful tips for moving during winter can help make your move
as easy and stress-free as possible:
1. Have your utilities turned on before your moving day. Reach out to your gas and electric company well in advance to schedule services. On a cold
winter day, the last thing you want is to walk into a house with no heat or electricity. Keep in
mind that winter days are shorter and will get dark early, so it is essential that the lights are
turned on, and the heat works. Although the winter is a less popular time to move, utility
companies can still get backed up for other reasons, like winter storms, so it is wise to call them
at least three weeks before your move.
2. Clear your walkways.
Keep rock salt, sand, or cat litter on hand to spread over slippery walkways. You can also use
de-icers, a snowblower, or try these snow and ice removal hacks. Clearing your walkways will
keep you, your family, and the movers safe while walking back and forth from your home to the
moving truck. By preventing slips and falls, this will also help ensure that your belongings are
protected. If you cannot shovel your walkways yourself, consider asking a neighbor for help

3. Don't pack away your winter gear.
Keep winter gear easily accessible if you live in an area where it snows. Even if there is no
snow in the forecast, we all know how quickly that can change. Keep a hat, scarf, gloves, and
winter boots within reach just in case. Also, make sure you don't pack away your snow shovel or
ice scraper. Having the necessary clothing and tools within reach will make your winter move

4. Protect your carpet and floors.
If it's snowy or icy, that moisture can get tracked inside as the movers carry your belongings to

your four-legged friend for the day, you may wish to keep them in a room with the door closed or
secure them in their crate.
6. Keep extra linens on hand.
Have extra towels, blankets, or sheets ready as additional protection for valuable furniture. If it
snows during your move, you don't want these items getting wet. The movers may have moving
blankets with them, but it doesn't hurt to have extras. You can also use towels for any puddles
that accumulate indoors.
7. Hot drinks make every winter move better.
Don't underestimate the value of hot drinks during a winter move. Staying hydrated is key when
you're moving house, so you definitely want to have plenty of water on hand. However, in the
winter, it's also nice to have some hot beverages to warm you up. Offering your movers some
hot coffee, tea, or cocoa is also a nice gesture to help take the edge off the winter chill.
8. Timing matters when moving in the winter.
Schedule your move early in the day. With shorter, darker days in winter, you will want to make
the most of the daylight hours. Scheduling a morning move will help you get the bulk of the
moving done while it is still light out.
