🛠 Behind the Scenes: Keeping 5898 Running

🚂 5898’s #2 engine needed some attention to its Roots blowers. These mechanically driven pumps force large volumes of low-pressure fresh air into the diesel engine’s airbox, providing the air needed for combustion.

Over time, components wear, seals begin to leak, and unusual noises can develop. All signs that the blowers are ready for an overhaul.

💪 Under expert guidance, our volunteers successfully replaced both blowers on the #2 engine. At approximately 400 pounds each, getting these massive components into position inside a cramped engine room is no easy task!

🛤 It’s necessary jobs like this that keep our historic equipment in good safe operating condition.

💪 Not every volunteer job is glamorous!

💦 After the recent flash flooding across Southeast Missouri, our trestle bridge over Hubble Creek collected a massive log jam. The only safe way to clear it? Jump in and cut it apart! 🏊‍♂️

It may not be our favorite railroad chore, but it's an important one that keeps our trains running safely.

🌿 Friendly reminder: Please don't dump yard waste near streams or ditches. It doesn't just disappear. It washes downstream and creates problems for your neighbors.
