Let me be a little controversial today and tell you something about . Because if you believe what you see on social media, you’ve been sold a bill of goods.

Yes, the idea of stepping onto a gleaming with a champagne flute in hand sounds glamorous.

Instagram, TikTok influencers and celebrity “flex culture” have turned into a status symbol, a way to scream, “Look how important (or rich) I am!”

But as someone who’s been around long enough to separate fact from fiction, let me drop some truth bombs.

GULFSTREAM G550 OVERVIEW

The Gulfstream G550, a twin-engine business jet, originated from the GV-SP type by Savannah-based Gulfstream Aerospace. Its first flight occurred on July 18, 2002, with the name change to G550 announced in September 2002.

The G550 received FAA approval on August 14, 2003, and entered service the same year. While the final commercial G550 was delivered in June 2021, military variants continue production.

DESIGN AND CABIN

The G550 shares its airframe with the GV but features enhanced avionics, aerodynamics, cabin design, and engines for improved performance and range.

The cabin accommodates up to 19 passengers, with sleeping arrangements for eight and up to four living areas. Cabin dimensions include a length of 43 ft. 11 in., height of 6 ft., width of 7 ft., and volume of 1,669 cub ft.

The baggage compartment offers 170 cub ft. of space.
At 51,000 ft., the cabin altitude feels like 6,000 ft.

Enhancements over the GV include an additional pair of windows, a forward-relocated entry door, and improved comfort and visibility.

AVIONICS

The G550 features the PlaneView flight deck, based on Honeywell's Primus Epic system, with four 14-in. LCDs designed to reduce pilot workload. As the launch platform for PlaneView, it offers enhanced landing capabilities via the standard Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS), improving airport access.

PERFORMANCE AND VARIANTS

Powered by two BMW-Rolls-Royce BR700-710C4-11 engines, each with 15,385 lb. takeoff thrust, the G550 has an MTOW of 91,000 lb., landing weight of 75,300 lb., and basic operating weight of 48,300 lb. The maximum payload is 6,200 lb., reduced to 1,800 lb. with full fuel. It carries 41,300 lb. of usable fuel.

The G550's maximum operating Mach number is 0.885, with cruise speeds of 0.85 Mach (high-speed) and 0.80 Mach (long-range). The maximum altitude is 51,000 ft., with an initial cruise altitude of 41,000 ft.

Takeoff distance is 5,910 ft. The jet offers a 6,750-nm maximum range with eight passengers, four crew, and NBAA IFR reserves.

What is De-icing and How Does it Work for Private Jets?

It's winter time, and the skies are not just chilly, they're icy🌨️❄️🛩️

As the mercury drops, becomes both a luxury and a challenge. One critical aspect of winter aviation is de-icing, a process that ensures safety and efficiency in the cold. But what exactly is , and how does it keep your jet airborne during winter?

De-icing 101:

De-icing refers to the removal of ice, snow, or frost from the aircraft's surfaces before takeoff. This process is crucial because ice can alter the aerodynamics of a plane, potentially leading to hazardous flight conditions.

The Process:

1. Inspection: Before any fluids are applied, a thorough check of the aircraft is conducted to assess the extent of ice accumulation.

2. Application of De-icing Fluid:
- Type I Fluid: This is a heated, low-viscosity fluid used mainly for de-icing. It's quickly applied to remove existing ice but doesn't last long against further icing.

- Type II, III, and IV Fluids: These are thicker and used for anti-icing. They not only remove ice but also leave a protective layer that prevents new ice from forming for a longer period.

3. Anti-icing: After de-icing, anti-icing fluid is applied to keep ice from re-forming while the aircraft is taxiing to the runway. This fluid is particularly important during long taxi times or in heavy snow conditions.

Technology at play. Some modern jets have heated leading edges on wings and tail, which prevent ice formation even before it starts.

Unlike commercial aviation, private jet flyers must be aware of this process, as it entails additional costs to your flight.

The de-icing/anti-icing fluid price per gallon is around $40 or more. The number of gallons needed depends on the type of your jet, the exact weather, precipitations and the time during which the aircraft stayed outside.

And this is the reason why the de-icing bill is typically a separate one, issued upon the flight termination. One cannot be sure in advance what amount of chemicals will be used and after what weather conditions.

Starting from around $1,500 for a light jet the total price may reach several thousand USD for a large jet.

However, there is a small tip for private jet flyers: ask your booking manager to check if there are hangar-kept airplanes available for your flight. If yes, it can significantly reduce the expenses.

Take a look inside Elon Musk's $70 million private jet, which he says is the only exception to his disdain of luxuries like yachts and vacations 🛩️

The jet was built in 2015, and Musk acquired it in 2016. It isn't Musk's first plane: The Tesla CEO also owns a Dassault Falcon 900B, which he bought in 2004.

Amazon mogul Jeff Bezos and soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo each also reportedly own a Gulfstream G650ER.

In an interview with Chris Anderson at the TED Conference in April of 2022, Musk said he doesn't spend "billions of dollars a year in personal consumption" — but that the jet is an exception to his frugal lifestyle. Musk added that he doesn't own a home, a yacht, or take vacations.

"I mean, the one exception is the plane, but if I don't use the plane then I have less hours to work," he said in the interview.

The plane, which is under the registration N628TS, was in Austin, Texas, on April 15, according to a Twitter account that's run by a teenager and tracks the location of Musk's jet.

Musk spent $700,000 on his private jet in 2018 alone, flying around the US, Europe, and Asia, according to flight records obtained by the Washington Post.

Did you know the Global Express was the pioneer of ultra-long-range private jets?

At the time of its release, no other private jet had a cabin nearly as large, nor could any jet make such long-range direct flights like New York to Tokyo or Paris to Singapore.

One of the strengths of the Global Express is its ability to fly at high speeds without sacrificing range. Its maximum range is 7,000 miles (6,100 nautical miles) at a speed of .85 Mach.

The cabin can be configured to hold between 13 and 19 passengers in a space that is 6.3 feet high, 8.2 feet wide, and 48.4 feet long.

Despite a fairly high maximum takeoff weight of 95,000 pounds, the Global Express needs only 5,820 feet of runway to take off at sea level, and 7,880 feet to take off from a runway 5,000 feet above sea level.

When it was introduced in 1996, the Gulfstream GV (or Gulfstream V) was, as Business Jet Traveler calls it, "the first true long-range business jet".

In the early 1990s, the Gulfstream V (GV) was developed as a response to the Bombardier Global Express.

It was certified on April 11, 1997. Capable of flying up to 6,500 nmi (12,000 km), it rolled out in 1995 and was Gulfstream's first ultra-long range business jet.

At sea level, the GV can take off in just 6,110 feet of runway—impressive considering it has a payload of 6,600 lbs. and a maximum takeoff weight of 85,100 lbs.

It can climb to 37,000 feet in just 18 minutes, and with a maximum operating altitude of 51,000 feet, pilots are able to avoid air traffic and inclement weather.
