Here’s a look at the M/V Capt Dan Thomas pushing 13 covered hopper barges carrying cement and magnesite along the Illinois River.

During his nearly 50-year career, Captain Dan Thomas worked across nearly every stretch of America’s inland waterways, but the Illinois was one of his favorites. ACBL renamed the vessel in his honor in January 2022, a tribute to his lasting impact on ACBL and the industry.

ACBL's 12th Annual Charity Golf Outing, held in June at English Turn Golf Club, raised more than $50,000 in support of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation.

The Foundation uses the proceeds to support education, economic development and cultural programming, with the goal of preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of New Orleans and Louisiana.

One way the Foundation supports education is through the Don "Moose" Jamison Heritage School of Music, which offers free music lessons for children taught by renowned artists and instructors.

Jeff Carman, Vice President of Sales, recognized two Team Members whose efforts were instrumental in making this year’s outing a success.

A 35-barge tow on the Mississippi River puts the scale of marine transportation into perspective.

At approximately 1,000 feet long and 250 feet wide, the tow pushed by the M/V Christian Primm was about the size of a U.S. aircraft carrier. Fully loaded, 35 barges can carry the equivalent cargo of more than 2,000 tractor-trailers.

It’s a look at the scale of what moves on our inland waterways every day and the Mariners behind the work that helps keep America moving.

A conversation with a friend’s father helped put David Bryant on a path that would shape the next two decades of his life.

David joined ACBL as a Deckhand in 2007, looking for something he could build a future around. Over the years, David earned his license, moved into the wheelhouse and eventually took on a shoreside role as Port Captain.

Today, much of David’s work centers on problem-solving. He helps make sure Mariners have the training and equipment they need while helping crews navigate changing river conditions and day-to-day operational challenges.

Nearly 20 years after joining ACBL, David says the relationships he has built along the way are what make ACBL feel like home.

“It’s been my home for almost 20 years. ACBL to me means home.”

For 45 years, Andrew “Button” LeBlanc has been someone people at our Tiger Fleet know they can count on.

Now a Repair Technician with Southern Facilities, Button has built a reputation for showing up, helping others and looking out for the people around him.

Sonny Businelle, Senior Manager of Fleets and Facilities, says most Mariners who come through Tiger Fleet know that if they need something taken care of, Mr. Button is the person to call. He says that dependability comes with something else, too: a smile and a positive attitude, no matter what’s going on.

And the name everyone knows him by goes back long before his career at ACBL. His grandmother started calling him “Button” when he was little because she said he was “cute as a button,” and it stuck.

Button says helping people is simply part of who he is:

“I don’t mind helping people. I think that’s in me, helping people.”

Congratulations, Mr. Button, on 45 years with ACBL. Thank you for the experience you bring, the people you’ve helped and the impact you’ve made along the way.
