DHL Express Canada has temporarily suspended operations due to an ongoing strike by over 2,100 employees represented by the Unifor union. The strike began on June 8 following a company-imposed lockout, with contract disputes focused on wages and working conditions. The suspension, which began after new Canadian legislation banned the use of replacement workers during strikes, will continue until an agreement is reached or the law is amended.
DHL had initially managed to minimize disruption with contingency plans but claims the new legislation severely limits its operational capabilities. The company has requested government intervention, a move criticized by Unifor as undermining workers' rights.
This shutdown affects only DHL Express Canada and not other DHL business units like DHL Global Forwarding or DHL Supply Chain. Some businesses, including Lulus, Matsukaze, and Olive Young Global, have shifted to FedEx for shipping to Canada in response to the suspension.
