This week's verse comes straight from the mouth of Jesus.

He is speaking to His disciples on the night that He is betrayed. He is preparing them for His death that is about to take place. Jesus doesn't tell them that they will not have tribulation. Instead, He tells them where to find peace.

The disciples are to have peace in Christ (Philippians 4:7). He is a testimony that God is faithful to His promises (Isaiah 54:10). The only way that we can have peace is through the salvation of Jesus Christ (John 3:36). We have life even in death by being free from God's just punishment, which is Hell (2 Corinthians 5:8).

Christians will face tribulation and persecution (John 15:19). However, we take heart because Christ has overcome the world! "O death, where is your victory? Oh death, where is your sting?" (1 Corinthians 15:55).

Philippians 4:8 outlines what a Christian's thoughts are called to look like.

Paul is writing to the church in Philippi, and he refers to them as brothers. This indicates that they are believers (1 Timothy 6:2).

He lists 6 things that a believer should dwell on.
1. Whatever is true - the Bible. It is God's word to us (John 17:17).
2. Whatever is honorable - things that are worthy of respect. To flee from evil.
3. Whatever is just - a focus on the righteous things of God. His law and His perfect character.
4. Whatever is pure - this is to be unstained by sin and evil.
5. Whatever is lovely - what is pleasing in the sight of God.
6. Whatever is commendable - kind, gracious, and edifying thoughts.

All of these things are godly characteristics. It could be summarized in Colossians 3:2: "Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth." These are the things that are excellent and worthy of praise (Hebrews 13:15).
