This week’s adventure thru our home state of Kansas took us to Coffeyville to check out the fate of the Dalton gang. Back in 1892 during the end of the rough and tumble cowboy era they decided they were going to rob two banks simultaneously ( something Jessie James couldn’t do) with fake mustache’s on. Funny thing about this is they use to live in town so they thought this would hide there faces from locals. They found out very quickly this will not help.
As they rode into town they split up to rob both banks but the local townsfolk saw them coming with guns so they rose to arms themselves to keep their hard earned money where it belonged in the bank. Back then if banks were not backed by the FDIC they were just out of luck if they got robbed.
As they were waiting for the money the townsfolk starting shooting into the banks to stop them and than the pursuit was on down thru the alley ( death alley) just west of the Condon Bank and that’s where three out of the four met their demise. Emmett Dalton was shot 23 times but lived thru it and was sentenced to Lansing prison but was pardoned after 14 years served and moved to California to start over and become a author, actor, and than a real estate agent and passed away July 13th 1937 in Los Angeles.
