Madeleines. Tarte Tropézienne. Clafoutis. Tarte Tatin.

Just like every region of France has its own specialty dishes, each has its own specialty pastry.

When it comes to sweet desserts, no one does it like the French.

Bouillabaisse. Raclette. Quiche Lorraine. Boeuf Bourguignon. Cassoulet.

Every region of France has its own terroir and therefore its own cuisine. The local agricultural products determine the local specialties, whether they come from land or sea.

What French dish would you like to try first?

Did you know? Every French town and neighborhood has a market day where local farmers and vendors offer wide array of produce, food, and wares. This centuries old tradition has survived the arrival of online shopping and provide a wonderful opportunity to experience French food, culture, and community.

Stroll through the market and assemble an impromptu lunch. Say "bonjour!" to the locals. See all of the amazing local produce, cheeses, charcuterie, and artisan goods. Smell the roasted chicken or the freshly poured crepe batter. Have a taste of France.

Memories are connected to our sense of taste and smell, so it is no surprise that incredible meals become an indelible experience.

The souvenir that I purchased reminds me that I visited a particular city, but the memory of the le petit déjeuner that I ate in Strasburg transports me right back to the small café where I ate it. We enjoyed this little meal of coffee and pastries, “the breaking of the fast.” at a small café on our way into the square where we visited a cathedral and went on to discover la petite france: a charming neighborhood filled with winding canals, flower-lined bridges, and beautifully preserved half-timbered homes dating back hundreds of years.

What’s the best meal you’ve ever had while traveling?

Each July, I enjoy spending some time each morning watching the Tour de France cycling race. While I don’t always understand the competition part of the race, I do love seeing the countryside, towns, and villages. France is a beautiful and diverse country with centuries of history.

Several times during the month, the race will wind through a city or region that brings back wonderful memories of past trips. Other times, a village gets added to my “Must Visit” list for a future trip.

If you could visit one place in France, where would you go?

The Rhine Gorge is a 65km stretch in Germany between Bingen and Koblenz. For centuries this important transportation route connected the northern and southern ends of the continent, and the plethora of historic towns and villages that dot the landscape attest to that significance. Castles rise from the banks of the river, demonstrating that at one time this route needed to be defended. This stretch of the Rhine boasts the highest concentration of medieval castles anywhere in the world.

Sailing the Rhine Gorge is a chance to see fairytale castles, vineyard terraces, and picturesque villages. It's also a breathtaking landscape in its own right.

See the Rhine Gorge for yourself and understand why "The Swiss Grand Canyon" has inspired poets and artists for centuries.
