If you have a disabled parking placard, you can now have multiple placards to give to caregivers and drivers who don’t live with you.

The new rule comes after two Oregon parents sharing custody of their child with a disability had trouble keeping track of the sole disabled parking placard issued by the Oregon Department of Transportation Driver and Motor Vehicle Services (DMV).

That situation led to the passage of a state law allowing more than one placard, which may apply to situations such as:
• Families caring for a disabled child who shares their time between multiple homes;
• An older parent being cared for by adult children who don’t live with them; or
• Caregivers or friends/non-relatives who routinely provide transportation for a disabled person but who don’t live with them.

A good reminder from our local police department.

Disabled Person Parking Permits are available at no charge to drivers with disabilities – or drivers who transport people with disabilities. Disabled Person Parking Permits are for use by and belong to the person for whom DMV issues the permit, regardless of age. It is not associated with a particular vehicle and is only for use when the person with the disability travels in the car. Disabled Veteran license plates do not qualify the holder to park in a Disabled Person Parking place.

Oregon has four types of disabled parking signs to accommodate various disabled permits. The permits include the dark blue renewable permit, the red renewable temporary permit, the light blue wheelchair permit, and the blue Oregon Wounded Warrior permit.

Keizer Police Traffic Safety Unit encourages citizens to be mindful of parking in reserved, disabled parking places. For more information about ORS 811.615, go to https://oregon.public.law/statutes/ors_811.615.
