Pomodoro San Marzano - Our seed came directly to us from Campania, near Naples. I stopped growing San Marzano, mostly because the seed you can get domestically is not great. But then a friend spent sometime in the region and visited a bunch of small local producers and came back with a few seeds for us, we have never grown a domestic sourced one again, The flavor is just that superior. Which is because most domestic ones are of mixed genetics. Most likely ours is San Marzano 2 or Kiros. These are DOP protected releases of the old traditional genes discovered still growing on the slopes of Vesuvius. The San Marzano originally dates back to the early 20’s where the volcanic soils the slopes of Vesuvius, and that is why this tomato sits on the throne above most of the other paste tomatoes from that region. Thin skinned, thick dry flesh and few seeds make it a perfect tomato for the kitchen. I used to talk all kinds of smack on this tomato, but now with seeds from its home land I have been drawn into the cult.
