The Board of County Commissioners recognized Key West International Airport for receiving the Florida Airports Council Benjamin J. Siwinski Sustainability Award, announced last month during the Florida Airports Council Annual Conference in Fort Lauderdale. It is the airport’s third award for Concourse A and its fifth overall, recognizing the airport and its management for recent accomplishments.

The award is one of the council’s highest environmental honors, recognizing innovative sustainability efforts that strengthen Florida's aviation system while honoring the legacy of one of the industry's most respected environmental leaders. The award recognized the airport's innovative bird-friendly glass windows throughout the facility.

Key West lies along both the Atlantic and Mississippi flyways, placing the airport within a major migratory corridor used by hundreds of bird species each year. Large glass structures can present hazards to birds because reflections often create the illusion of open sky or habitat. Specialized ceramic frit patterns were embedded into the glass surface, creating visual markers that help birds recognize the structure and avoid collisions. The project team also utilized advanced glazing systems with low exterior reflectance to further reduce the likelihood of bird strikes.

“A commitment to protecting migratory birds was a defining environmental element of the project,” said Richard Strickland, Executive Director of Airports. “This award means a great deal to the entire team who worked on Concourse A and me.”

The award was named for Ben Siwinski, who was widely respected as an early pioneer in airport sustainability and environmental resiliency. Throughout his career, he championed innovative environmental practices at airports across Florida and nationally while mentoring countless young aviation professionals. After his passing in 2022, the Florida Airports Council created this award to continue his legacy of innovation, stewardship, and leadership.

At Wednesday’s Board of County Commissioners meeting, the board declared yesterday as Monroe County Aviation Day in line with National Aviation Day. First declared in 1939, it recognizes how aviation has transformed the way people connect, conduct business, respond to emergencies, and explore the world. It is also the birthday of aviation pioneer Orville Wright.

"Key West International Airport and Florida Keys Marathon International Airport continue to strengthen connectivity through ongoing infrastructure improvements, expanded commercial air service, and investments that support economic opportunity while maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational excellence," said Richard Strickland, Executive Director of Airports.

🌎 Today, we're celebrating the people, places and possibilities that keep us connected through the power of flight.

🌴 In recognition of National Aviation Day, Monroe County has also proclaimed August 19 as Monroe County Aviation Day, celebrating the important role Key West International Airport (EYW) and Florida Keys Marathon International Airport (MTH) play in keeping the Keys connected.

✈ Thanks a million! Year-to-date traffic at Key West International Airport is at an all-time high: the airport welcomed its 1 millionth passenger in July, earlier in the year than at any previous point in airport history. Additionally, passenger traffic increased 16.8 percent for the month, year over year.

👜So far in 2026, 1,019,928 passengers have used the airport, an increase of 8.8 percent over 2025.

✈️The numbers speak for themselves: Key West remains a top destination for air travelers. Passenger traffic is up 8.1 percent for the first half of the year at Key West International Airport (EYW), while the month of June saw a 16.7 percent spike over 2025.

🌴It was the airport’s strongest summer start on record with 119,175 passengers using the airport in the month of June. The passenger tally will likely surpass 1 million by the end of July.

✈️We had the best time hosting Camp Shriver athletes from Special Olympics Florida today and send out a sincere thank you to:
🚒 Monroe County Fire Rescue - Florida Keys for hosting most of the activities in the Station 7 Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) building and Station 8 for bringing an ambulance to explore.
🚓 MCSO - Florida Keys and Lt. Mixon for deputizing the athletes!
✈️ Signature Aviation for being such a gracious host.
🏆 Monroe County Mayor Michelle Lincoln for enduring a tough round of questions and giving a lesson in government 101.
🌶️ Master ConcessionAir and Chili's Grill & Bar for providing an incredible lunch.
⭐️City of Key West -- Government for providing safe transportation for the athletes.

⏳ Camp Shriver History
When people speak of the origin of Special Olympics, they look no further than the first Camp Shriver. Founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in the early 1960s, it was one woman's dream that started in her own backyard. They speak of her vision: how through sports, the lives of these athletes would be changed forever.
