Why is everyone talking about extending fish on a Disney cruise? 🐠

Fish Extenders, Pixie Dusting, gift exchanges… if you’re planning your first Disney cruise, the sailing groups can make it sound like there’s a whole second vacation to prepare for. 😂

Here’s the deal: Fish Extenders are organized gift exchanges, and Pixie Dusting is a surprise gift just because. Both are fun, and both are completely optional. If you love planning gifts for other families, go for it! Me? I travel light, and I’m not packing a second suitcase just to participate. If we get Pixie Dusted, that’s a fun bonus. I’m not going to stress about what we’re not doing. You don’t have to do every tradition to have a great Disney cruise.

Planning your first Disney cruise? What’s one thing you keep seeing in the sailing groups that you want explained?

Everyone talks about what to do with a late flight after a Disney cruise out of Port Canaveral. But if you’re sailing out of Port Everglades, don’t forget you’ve got a whole different destination to work with.

We had a late flight out of FLL, and the Everglades gave us something fun to do while also solving the transportation + luggage problem.

Other options? A day room, beach time, bikes, exploring Fort Lauderdale, or another activity that works with your flight timing.

Because sitting at the airport for 6 hours is not the only option! If you’re planning a Disney Cruise, get my FREE DCL Booking guide at the top of my page.

One thing I didn’t expect on a Disney Christmas cruise?

The tree lighting.

I knew the ship would be decorated. I knew there would be a giant Christmas tree. And I knew Disney would make the holidays feel special.

But watching Mickey and Minnie help light the tree while you’re standing there with your family on a cruise ship?

That got me.

Because you’re not trying to recreate Christmas at home. You’re celebrating Christmas somewhere completely different.

And if you’re wondering whether a Very Merrytime cruise would actually feel like Christmas, this is one of the moments that makes me say yes.

Is your kid ready for Halloween Horror Nights?

My 6 year old conquered Monsters Unchained wearing plastic vampire teeth, and parents keep asking me if that means she's ready for HHN. It doesn't, and it's not even the same test. Universal itself says the event is not recommended for kids under 13.

I wrote the honest breakdown: why Dark Universe tells you almost nothing about HHN readiness, the 3 questions I'd ask before taking any tween or teen, and why skipping it doesn't make your Halloween trip lesser. HHN ends November 1: https://onceuponadeparturetravels.wordpress.com/2026/10/15/is-halloween-horror-nights-too-scary-for-kids/

Client Question of the Week: “I get motion sick. Should I skip a Disney cruise?” 🚢

Short answer? No… and I say that as someone who gets motion sick!

I recently got this question from someone who assumed a cruise was automatically off the table for her. Here is what I told her:

A Disney ship is not a fishing boat. These ships are huge, they have stabilizers, and on a typical Bahamas or Caribbean sailing, most guests barely feel the ship move. The motion people worry about is almost never what they pictured.

And if you are prone to motion sickness like I am, you do not just hope for the best. You prepare.

My personal routine: I take Bonine, I keep ginger chews in my bag, and I wear Sea-Bands on both wrists. That combination has carried me through multiple sailings now.

Your stateroom location matters too. Midship, on a lower deck, moves the least. The very front and very back of the ship are where you feel it most, so stateroom placement is one of the first things I look at when I book a client who gets motion sick.

Still nervous? Start small. A 3 or 4-night sailing is a low-risk way to test your sea legs before you commit to a full week.

I get motion sick in cars, on rides, and on boats. I still cruise every chance I get. The trick is not avoiding the ship. It is planning for the motion before it ever gets the chance to be a problem.

Are you a motion sick person who cruises anyway? What works for you? 👇

One less thing to pay for on your Disney cruise 👀

The DCL app’s complimentary onboard Wi-Fi lets you use iMessage and WhatsApp to stay in touch with people at home. You don’t need to purchase a paid internet package for that.

For me, that’s enough.

I’d rather have a few days where I *can’t* constantly check email, scroll, or respond to everything happening at home.

Sometimes being less connected is exactly what makes a vacation feel like a vacation.

Would you skip the paid Wi-Fi?

New here? Start here!

I'm Amber, a travel advisor! I plan Universal Orlando and Disney Cruise vacations for families, and a lot of my families bring grandparents along too.

What you will get on this page: the ticket and hotel decisions that actually change a Universal trip, Disney Cruise first timer tips that save you standing in line, and honest takes on what is worth it and what to skip. I travel with a young kid and food allergies in the family, so I plan for the stuff the brochures skip.
