Heads up, drivers — NHTSA just extended the comment deadline on its latest safety‑exemption rule to September 30.

This update doesn’t change CDL rules, HOS, medical cards, or driver requirements. It also doesn’t approve any new trucks or equipment. What it does change is how manufacturers can request exemptions for certain vehicles — including some built before an exemption takes effect.

For most drivers, nothing changes today. But fleets and buyers may see future impacts depending on how specific exemptions are granted.

If you want your voice heard, you can still submit comments through the official docket before September 30.

Staying informed keeps you ahead. Stay safe out there. 💪🚛

🚛 Big news for truck drivers!

The FMCSA is testing pilot programs that could give drivers more flexibility with their hours-of-service rules. One initiative would allow truckers to pause the 14-hour clock for up to 3 hours, helping them better manage delays from traffic, weather, or detention time at facilities.

While safety advocates worry this could stretch workdays to 17 hours, many carriers believe the added flexibility could reduce fatigue and improve safety by letting drivers rest when they need it most.

👉 These pilots could reshape how drivers balance rest, traffic, and customer demands — with full rollout planned for 2027.

💬 What do you think: Is pausing the 14-hour clock a step forward for driver safety and flexibility, or does it risk pushing drivers too far?

🚛 Brake Safety Week 2026 is here!
From August 23–29, CVSA inspectors across North America are focusing on brake drums and rotors during roadside checks.

🔎 Inspectors are looking for:
Cracked or broken drums/rotors
Worn brake linings or pads
Audible air leaks
Rust holes or broken springs

❗ Trucks with serious brake violations can be placed out of service until repairs are made.

👉 Routine inspections and preventive maintenance are key to keeping drivers safe and avoiding costly downtime.

🚨 Louisiana Audit Raises Concerns 🚨

A new legislative audit reveals that 7 of Louisiana’s 17 permanent weigh stations were closed, leading to fewer inspections and hundreds of trucks bypassing required stops.

Key findings:

📉 Truck inspections dropped by 13%
⚖️ Overweight violations fell by 50%
💰 Penalty collections declined by 42%, with $2M in unpaid fines still outstanding

Auditors recommend expanding mobile weigh scales, using more virtual technology, and improving coordination between DOTD and State Police. While State Police dispute parts of the report, the audit highlights the urgent need to strengthen enforcement and protect Louisiana’s highways.

👉 What do you think — should mobile and virtual weigh stations become the new standard?

📉 Spot Market Rates Weaker Than Expected
The latest Truckstop.com data shows freight demand easing across the board:

🚛 Dry Van: Posted its largest seasonal decline on record, dropping to $2.69 per mile.

❄️ Refrigerated: Rates rose slightly to $3.33 per mile, but gains were smaller than usual for this time of year.

🪵 Flatbed: Extended its 8-week losing streak, falling to $3.42 per mile.

Even with these declines, rates remain significantly higher than last year. Still, the market is showing clear seasonal pressure as load volumes soften and truck postings drop.

👉 What does this mean for drivers and carriers? Staying flexible and keeping an eye on regional shifts will be key in navigating the weeks ahead.
