Ireland day 15, our last full day in Ireland. We had to return the motorhomes this morning after driving almost 1500 miles all over Ireland. Into Dublin for 1 more night. Lunch at “The Auld Dubliner”, a refreshment at the Temple Bar Pub, a little souvenir shopping, a stop by St. Patrick’s Cathedral, afternoon coffee at St. Stephen’s Green, a stop by Jamison for a personalized bottle of an exclusive blend you can’t buy in the U.S. Dinner at The Brazen Head, the oldest pub in Dublin (they claim to be the oldest pub in the world but according to Guinness Book of World Records that distinction belongs to Sean’s Bar in Athlone where we visited a few days ago). Then back to the hotel for a nightcap and sleep in a real bed. It’s been a busy but awesome couple of weeks in Ireland.

Ireland day 14… as the trip coasts to the end we had a relaxing, slow start to the day at the same caravan park where we spent the last 2 days near Athlone then headed to our last stop outside of Dublin. No real sight seeing today, just making the move back toward Dublin and packing up the motorhomes for their return tomorrow. We had a simple dinner and a few drinks after Joan and I took a “brisk” dip in the Irish Sea. We learned the difference between “Facebook reality” and “true reality” (see the pictures) but it was enjoyable anyway.

Ireland Day 13…As the Ireland trip winds down we had a little more relaxing day today with less driving than normal. We simply spent a few hours in Tullamore. Home to my favorite Irish Whiskey, Tullamore DEW and the place where my great grandfather, Joseph Patrick Feeney was born in 1874. Nothing elaborate just a stop at the Distillery for an Irish Coffee and I even got to create my own blend of Irish Wiskey. That was followed by lunch at a cool old pub in town and walking the streets of an old Irish town away from the normal tourist route. Followed that up with an anniversary dinner for Joan and I (our 31st) at another pub near the caravan park. 1 more day with the motorhomes and 2 days total left in Ireland.

Ireland Day 12…started out in Belfast at the Titanic experience located where the Titanic was originally built and launched. Interesting but quite honestly not that great, kind of disorganized but still worthwhile. Then it was our longest drive day of the trip heading to Athlone, home of Ireland’s oldest pub, Sean’s Bar, dating back to around 900AD. After a quick refreshment there it was off to dinner and back to the “Caravan Park” as they call a campground here for the sunset over the lake. This adventure is slowly winding down.

Ireland day 11. Left this morning from just east of Derry. Dunluce Castle was very impressive. As most in Ireland (or Northern Ireland) it is mostly ruins but it was the largest, most impressive we’ve seen and the view of it from the parking area about a 1/4 mile away was awesome. Giant’s Causeway however, I thought was a little overhyped. Lunch at “The Nook” pub right nearby was good and getting to see a seal in the wild was awesome but the Giant’s Causeway itself was a bit disappointing. Then we made a quick stop and Bushmills Distillery to pick up
A few necessary items before heading to our campsite just outside Belfast for the night. The trip is winding down but we still have a few more stops to make before it’s over.

Day 10 in Ireland brought us finally to Northern Ireland. Started out from Donegal, headed to Doe Castle, another 1600’s castle (ruins), there are lots of them around here. Toured the castle and had lunch next to it then on to the Great Pollet Sea Arch, a cool stone arch formation along the northern coast of Ireland. Good hike and neat views of the arch before heading into Northern Ireland and camping for the night a little east of Derry (Londonderry). A quiet night with a good dinner cooked by my sweetie, cigar and a proper Irish nightcap.

Ireland Day 9…as beautiful and peaceful as our “wild camping” spot seemed to be last night, it wasn’t quite perfect. Sometime after 1am the local drunk and his girlfriend rolled in blasting the stereo, singing loudly (and poorly) and carrying on obviously drunk. This went on for about an hour and got really sketchy when they started talking about waking up the people in the camper vans and making them come out and party. We’ve done a lot of boondocking all across the U.S. and while I wouldn’t call it scary, it was certainly the most uncomfortable situation we’ve ever experienced. Finally they left and we got back to sleep but we were a little tired all day. There was another motorhome in the same place next to us and this morning the Irish gentleman in that motorhome approached us and “apologized on behalf of his county for the rubbish we had to put up with last night”. This is more indicative of what we’ve experienced with the locals we’ve met on this trip. Once we got moving we visited Sligo Abby, Mullaghmore Point (awesome views), Donegal Castle, the ruins of Donegal Friary and found a unique wild camping spot for the night. A large car park that allows overnight camping (joined by about 50 more motorhomes) right in town which allowed us to visit another cool little pub before a nice dinner in town. Tomorrow we had for Northern Ireland.

Ireland Day 8…A bit if an up and down day. We left the area of Gallway this morning, Spiddal Mobile Home Park, not the best campground but OK for the night. Headed first to Aasleagh Falls. It was a nice walk and the falls were pretty but not nearly as impressive looking as they were in the guide book. Had lunch at the falls parking lot then headed for Parke’s Castle, a mostly restored 1600’s castle, much of it original. We almost didn’t go there but very glad we did. It was a bit of a gem off the beaten path and our tour by Seamus, yes that’s right, it doesn’t get much more Irish than that, was great. He was knowledgeable with a dry sense of humor that was worth the trip. We had afternoon coffee next to the castle then headed for our “Wild Camping” spot in Sligo, which turned out to be a bust! According to our app “Park4Night” there were several good locations in town but none were available, all forbid overnight parking so we backtracked almost back to the castle to a scenic overlook on Lough Gill (Bright Lake) with a view of Parke’s Castle on the other side. Great view, good dinner and a little Irish liquid refreshment made for a great evening.
