⚠️ Notice ⚠️

Tomorrow, September 9, Blue Grass Airport will be hosting a full-scale emergency exercise. As a result, you may see an increased presence of emergency responders at the airport. This is all part of a simulated training exercise and is not an emergency.

For the GA community on the west side, there will be adjustments to operations on that day. Runway 9-27 will be closed. However, the ramp will remain open, as will taxiway access to Runway 4-22, so GA pilots may access WestLEX and 4-22 as they like. We ask that pilots remain alert as they taxi, as there will be many people of all ages and levels of airport familiarity in the area.

For our next , we wanted to know: Why are most aircraft painted white?

As it turns out, there are several reasons!

White reflects sunlight better than other colors, which keeps the aircraft cooler and minimizes any heat-related damage that could occur. The color also makes it easier for birds and other pilots to spot the plane in the air. Using white paint is also a cost-saving measure, too! The paint fades slower than darker colors, making it less necessary to be repainted regularly.

Do you have a favorite aircraft color or livery? Let us know in the comments!

Have you ever been on a plane that's received a water cannon salute? This tradition originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where maritime ships were welcomed and launched with water arches to honor a successful voyage. Now, the tradition carries over into aviation, where salutes are used as a mark of respect for final flights of an aircraft, new aircraft arrivals, a pilot's final flight or for veterans and service members arriving home.

Check out some water cannon salutes we've had here at Blue Grass Airport over the years!

WestLEX sees aircraft of all kinds... including the Goodyear Blimp! This week, we were lucky enough to see the blimp land and even got to snap some pics of WestLEX from the window of Wingfoot Two. Let us know in the comments below if you've ever been able to see the blimp here at LEX.
