Is a lower asking rent in Queens automatically a cheaper move than Manhattan?
No. The rent gap is only one part of the transition cost.
StreetEasy’s August 2026 data lists median asking rent at $4,995 in Manhattan and $3,450 in Queens. It also reports concessions on 12.2% of Manhattan rentals and 17.9% of Queens rentals.
Before moving boroughs, compare asking rent and concessions with the commute, lease overlap, moving and packing, and temporary storage if the dates do not line up.
A cheaper apartment can still create a more expensive transition if the timing is poor.
With more than 17 years helping New Yorkers move between boroughs, our licensed and insured New York moving team (NYSDOT 40607) recommends comparing the full transition cost, not rent alone. Lease overlap and temporary storage can change the math quickly.
