Hotel del Coronado

A rare surviving example of an American architectural genre—the wooden Victorian beach resort—it was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1970[4] and a National Historic Landmark in 1977.[3][5] It is the second-largest wooden structure in the United States (after the Tillamook Air Museum in Tillamook, Oregon).

It Was the First Commercial Building Lit by Electricity
Thomas Edison came to the Hotel del Coronado shortly before it opened to oversee the installation of electric lighting. When everything was in place, The Del became the first commercial structure to be illuminated by electricity. On a related note, Edison returned in 1904 to debut the world’s first lighted Christmas tree, which stood on the hotel’s lawn.

The Dry Garden, Karesansui

The Dry (Karesansui) Garden, sometimes erroneously called Zen is a garden that does not fit the Westerner’s typical image of a garden. Instead of colorful flowers and foliage, it is instead a simple bed of raked gravel, interspersed with a few large rocks and surrounded by shrubs.

Hotel Del Coronado

The hotel was first featured in a film when it was used as a backdrop for The Flying Fleet (1927). Since then, it has been featured in at least 12 other films, including: Some Like It Hot (1959), starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, and Tony Curtis, where it represented the "Seminole Ritz" in southern Florida; Wicked, Wicked (1973), which was completely filmed on location there; The Stunt Man (1980), starring Peter O'Toole; The Girl, the Gold Watch & Everything (1980) starring Pam Dawber; and My Blue Heaven (1990), starring Steve Martin and Rick Moranis.
