Marginal Way DIY Pool — Seattle, Washington.

Gonzales Pool in Mar Vista, California, had a slide that’s now part of the collection at the Skateboarding Hall of Fame Museum.

I’m wondering who saved the slide and eventually donated it to the museum.

Here’s the original pool, Hogan’s Pool in Fresno, CA, that Team Pain Skateparks used as inspiration for the Sarasota Skatepark pool in Florida.

I skated Hogan’s in 2003, and then, 10 years later, skated the Sarasota pool in 2013. Pretty cool to have skated both the original and the replica a decade apart.

Sarasota Skatepark Pool in Florida — this is the hardest pool I’ve skated so far. It was just hard to generate speed because of the grippy concrete.

Real pools have pool plaster, which makes it easier to slide off the front wheels, especially in the shallow end, and keep your speed going.

This pool is a replica of Hogan’s Pool in Fresno, and it has super-steep transitions, a wedding cake in the shallow end, a love seat, a death box, and even a built-in pool light for visual effect.

It’s legit! Nothing like a fresh paint job to make it faster.

In 2004, Glendale Skatepark was without a doubt the best public skatepark around. Everyone was going there to skate, and you could session with skate legends on any given day.

I shot these pictures on a borrowed digital point-and-shoot camera, and I never shared them before.

Glendale Skatepark Pool. Built in 2004, this one definitely makes my list of . The kidney bowl has a deathbox, pool coping, and tile.

Now here’s what I’m trying to remember: Was Glendale the first modern public skatepark in California, or even elsewhere, to have a deathbox?

I have a feeling this might have been the first one. If anyone knows of an earlier example, I’d love to hear about it!

And just to be clear: I’m talking about public skateparks, not private pools or DIY spots.

Anaheim West Skatepark Pool. Built in 2002. I’m pretty sure this was one of the first pool replicas built during the new era of skateparks in California.

This one originally had real pool coping and tiles, along with some steep transitions—especially in the shallow end. It was so much fun when it had the pool coping and tiles.

Unfortunately, those modifications completely changed the character of the pool. The original pool coping and tiles have been replaced with metal coping, and honestly, it’s a shame. Some things just don’t need to be “improved.” This pool was perfect the way it was.
