A curtain made in 1818 by Movses Harut in Madras, India, which he donated to the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Reverend Krikor Jughaetsi handed it over to the Patriarchate.
A merchant ship of the Armenian global trade and economic network is depicted on the curtain. To avoid a possible attack by pirates, it crossed the Indian Ocean under the auspices of the British naval flag. Armenian merchants received that right after signing a special agreement with the English East India Company in 1688.
The following is written at the bottom of the curtain:
"CURTAIN DRAWN IN MADRAS SPONSORED BY MOVSES HAROUTIOUN IN MEMORY OF HIS DECEASED PARENTS AND GIFTED TO SAINT HAGOPYANTS CHURCH THROUGH INDIA DELEGATE, PRIEST KRIKOR CHOUGHAYETSVOTS FROM THE HOLY CITY OF JERUSALEM IN THE YEAR 1818".

This 1818 silk curtain was made by Indian-Armenian community for the Armenian Patriarchy of Jerusalem. It told the forgotten story about Iranian Armenians’ commercial navy that played prominent role on the Sea Silk Road between India, China and Europe in 17 century. Iranian Armenian merchant then had a fleet of about 150 ships traveling between Manila, Mumbai, Hong Kong and Venice.
