Trucking fleets now have a more efficient pathway to get new technicians on‑the‑job sooner, thanks to a new five‑year training waiver from Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The waiver reduces the required training time from a full year to just 540 hours — combining classroom work and on‑the‑job training — when the program follows Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC)’s Recommended Practices. Gino Fontana, EVP and COO of Transervice Logistics, notes this change helps address technician shortages and improves readiness without sacrificing safety or quality.

The five-year exemption reduces training hours to 540, balancing classroom instruction with on-the-job training in brake inspection and repair.
