When to Book for the Best Value 🤗

Here's a planning tip most travelers don't know until it's too late: river cruise pricing and cabin availability move together.

"Wave season" — roughly November through March — is typically when cruise lines release their best promotions and incentives for the year ahead, and it's also when the widest choice of cabins and sailing dates are still available. Wait until spring to start looking, and you're often choosing from what's left rather than what you actually want.

If a river cruise is anywhere on your radar for 2027, this is the window to start the conversation.

What "Low Water" Actually Means when it comes to a River Cruise.

If you've researched river cruising, you may have seen headlines about "low water levels" on the Rhine or Danube — and it's worth understanding what that actually means for your trip.

Rivers rise and fall, and cruise lines plan for it. When water runs lower than usual, itineraries may shift — a different embarkation city, a ship swap with a sister vessel, or a motorcoach transfer around a tricky stretch. What doesn't usually happen is a cancelled vacation. Cruise lines have gotten very good at adapting in real time.

The takeaway: build a little flexibility into your expectations, and let your advisor track conditions for you. That's what we're here for. Cruise lines such as Avalon, AmaWaterways, and Riverside are the very best at accommodating their passengers when the itinerary changes.
