Hert Trucking Receives Special Award From School District
Lucerne Valley USD Superintendent Peter Livingston presented S.S. Hert Trucking with a special award for its ongoing generosity to the school district and its students at the October 8, 2026 meeting of the Board of Trustees. Specifically, Mr. Livingston cited the company’s extremely generous annual gifts to the Senior Baskets project.
“The people we have here tonight are some excellent supporters of our district over the years,” Mr. Livingston said. “It's the Hert Trucking family.”
Mr. Livingston explained that the senior basket project, which was started by school board member Jessica Risler and several other devoted residents, provides personalized baskets to each graduating senior. Volunteers each “adopt” a L.V.H.S. senior and create large, customized baskets full of goodies for the students. The centerpiece of each special gift basket has been a $100 bill provided by Hert Trucking. With as many as 80-plus seniors graduating during some years that gift has been truly awe-inspiring.
“They did it for about a five years commitment,” Mr. Livingston said, “They kept that project alive.”
The gifts by Hert Trucking, which is a pillar of the Lucerne Valley business community, were especially appreciated for the graduates of the Class of 2020 whose senior year was altered when the COVID pandemic temporarily stopped in-person school.
“A lot of our seniors, you know, that was the last chance for them to be celebrated, and Hert Trucking really stepped up,” Mr. Livingston said. “Without their support over the years we would not have been able to continue that project. They were just such a vital piece of that project and we're just so grateful for everything that they did for the kids' community and their continued support of our kids' families. It (the gifts) showed that the community is behind them and we all want them to be successful.”
Scott S. Hert, the founder of S.S. Hert Trucking, now retired, shared his thoughts on how the company began and why giving back means so much to him and the entire Hert family. (His sons and their families continue to run S.S. Hert Trucking).
“When we first went into business, we worked in our backyard, as most startups do, but it was the Chamber of Commerce and the School Board that showed us that we could go to the county to get (our business) approved. There was a whole bus load of people from here that went to San Bernardino (County Board of Supervisors meeting) to help get us approved.”
Scott attended elementary school in Lucerne Valley, but he had to take the bus to attend high school in Apple Valley. He said that the Lucerne Valley students who had to make the daily trek felt like second class citizens. His sons, however, were able to attend elementary, middle and high schools here in Lucerne Valley. That is one of the reasons why he is so appreciative of the Lucerne Valley USD and he and his family want to help the district students when they can.
“So with our three boys that went to the school here and the things that we explored and the community has done for us, whenever we can, we like to give back.”
Because of the ongoing support of the Lucerne Valley community S.S. Hert Trucking has been successful for 42 years and running. “We thank the community and the support,” Scott Hert said.
