Schooner Heron Charters

Schooner Heron Charters Six People, Five Hours... beautiful schooner sailing on the Chesapeake Bay Nothing on the Bay can compare with this amazing offer! The Tiki Bar!

For a party of six: a wonderful afternoon sailing on the Bay aboard the beautiful 60-foot staysail Schooner Heron, with Captain Aram Nersesian. So much more than a boat rental or a “head boat.” This is a private charter for you and your family and friends... up to six people...

A short 50-minute drive south of the DC Beltway puts you in a place where the land meets the sea and opportunities for

excitement and relaxation abound. Enhance your recreational get-away to Southern Maryland by taking a 5-hour sail aboard our custom built French staysail schooner, Heron. She's 60-feet long with an expansive flush deck and cockpit, so there's plenty of room to move about, work the boat, and relax. Captain Aram Nersesian will give your party of six the kind of sailing day that YOU want. Help with the sail handling and steering, or sit back and relax. You may even want to head up the Patuxent River to tie up at Vera's Restaurant, enjoy a meal, and delight in a river cruise home. If there's a strong breeze, you will enjoy a hearty and robust day on the Bay. If the wind is mild, relish the peacefulness and beauty of the natural environment. Take the standard 5-hour sail, study our "Cruise Ideas," or be creative and come up with your own suggestions. And while you're in Solomons, partake of the local food and drink... and of course, there are accommodations galore to extend your Southern Maryland escape. The Calvert Marine Museum! There's plenty to do and see. Check out the SolomonsMaryland.com website for information. Come sailing with us, and for just a little while, throw your cares to the wind!

One of the joys of life, meeting nice folks. 9.9.25 charter with Glenn, Mary Anne, Jonathan and Abigail was that kind of day. And, lots of wind. I couldn't pry "someone" off the helm. (hint: green shirt) I love that kind of enthusiasm. And, a couple of pelicans put on a beautiful show, hovering over the boat for several minutes, I guess getting a lift off the mainsail as we charged north on the Bay. And, thanks to Mark Kircher for coming along to help. Second time out for him now. I think he's enjoying the sailing. Not quite the F-18 he used to fly, but the same principles at work.

Update on status of charter availability. I appreciate the inquiries I have been receiving. I'm still in recovery from shoulder surgery, and won't be able to (hopefully) offer charters until after Sept. 1. If you're interested in doing some fall sailing with lower temperatures and good breeze, get in touch! Thanks.

8.22.24 NIH / The Children's Inn sailing day. Once again, no wind... but wonderful people aboard. It's certainly a humbling privilege to continually meet these courageous folks from around the world. Algeria, South Africa, and North Carolina represented this time. And, as always, this motley crew was a photographer's dream. Photogenic, "attitude," and lots of smiles. Kristin Arabian aboard... last time as a single woman!!! Thanks again, Jim and Sue, for helping.

6.27.24 NIH Sail with a great crew aboard. Thanks again to Jim for coming along to help. Nice weather. We just can't seem to scare up enough wind. But, a lovely day anyway.

6.23.24 Sail with Meghan and boys, and Craig. My first actual sail after a little repair work. Nice, crisp day.

5.30.24 NIH sail, with Red and Suzan helping out. Beautiful weather. A little rough out on the Bay, so we stayed in the Pax River. As Red said, the smiles from the children make it all worth while. Algeria and the Bahamas were represented aboard. And, Sam Angell, communications specialist from NIH aboard, and enjoying himself.

"Joys of Waterfront Living," Chapter 3. Springtime sea grass growing, then dying… coming to the surface, and turning into rotting goo. This tangles along the dock pilings, and the hull of Heron, creating very difficult stains. My solution: create a dam from polypropylene line (floats) on either side of the dock. Keeps it away from my boat and dock.

9.25.23 NIH/Children's Inn sail. This was a great sail! Wind! (finally) And terrific people aboard. Kalli and Cristian from NIH were aboard, first time. Ryan Henderson -- pilot, sailor -- came along to help. And three wonderful families. We all didn't want the day to end. I had an excellent time taking photos. Very photogenic "subjects."

Ooo... late with these photos from 8.23.23 NIH Sail with one lovely family. Once again, not a lot of wind, but we had ICE CREAM! Lucky to have Susan Stevenson as co-cap'n, and Molly Winans aboard. (You have to change all the settings on the camera when shooting Molly... with that smile... It's like shooting straight into the sun.)

7.31.23 NIH "The Children's Inn" Sail. And nothing makes a kid happier than ice-cream! (0º freezer on a boat?), and steering! We were represented, that day, by Peru, Cuba, Honduras, Pakistan, and India. Great smiles. Humbling to be in the presence of such courage. Handsome young men, beautiful children, dedicated parents. Bravo to The Children's Inn, and NIH, for all they do.
