Happy World Cotton Day! 🇺🇸🌱
Cotton helped build rural America. Now, USDA is fighting to ensure American cotton has a strong future.
Through the Great American Cotton Plan, we’re rebuilding demand, strengthening domestic milling, expanding markets, and putting America’s cotton growers FIRST.
The stakes are enormous:
🇺🇸 Every $1 of cotton produced at the farm gate generates roughly $15 in economic activity.
🏭 America has gone from 2,254 cotton gins in 1980 to just 419 today.
🧵 Of the roughly 20 million bales of cotton products consumed in the U.S, only 4 million are American-grown.
🌎 Nearly 70% of the world’s textile fiber is now synthetic.
We’re working to change that.
✅ Plant Not Plastic — growing demand for natural, American-grown fiber
✅ Increasing mill support from 3¢ to 5¢ per pound
✅ Opening new markets for American cotton
✅ Strengthening the farm safety net for our growers
And today, Secretary Rollins is on the ground in North Carolina at an American cotton gin with another MAJOR announcement for our producers.
Grow it here. Sew it here. Make it here.
American cotton is coming back. 🇺🇸
