✈️Meet the Pilot Monday✈️

This Monday, we’re introducing Jerome Williams, 49, from Demopolis, Alabama!

Jerome is a proud dad to two daughters, Charlee and Katie, and a proud Papi to Austin Lee. ❤️

His love for flying started young. Jerome first soloed at just 14 years old and earned his Private Pilot License at 17! With more than 30 years of flying experience, Jerome has spent decades doing what he loves and sharing his passion for aviation.

But if you know Jerome, you know flying is just one part of what makes him special. He is the definition of a true Southern gentleman. Always a “yes ma’am” and “no sir,” always wearing a smile, and the kind of person who would do just about anything for anybody.

When he’s not flying, you might find Jerome searching for unique rocks—because every good pilot needs a solid collection of interesting finds! 🪨

And one thing you definitely won’t find Jerome doing? Getting anywhere near a snake! He doesn’t like them one bit—and apparently, that includes the fake ones too😆 Hope he doesn’t encounter any snakes on a plane 🐍

We asked Jerome a few questions about flying, and here’s what he had to say… ✈️👇

1. What inspired you to become a pilot?
“My Grandad(Pop) flew in the military and retired and always had airplanes. My dad was an AG pilot and at the age of 5 or 6, I told him that’s what I wanted to do.”

2. What has been the most memorable about flying?
“Me and my dad got to fly together for 12 years.”

3. What’s the strangest thing you have seen while flying?
“B2 bomber flew straight at me for miles and passed me about 300 feet.”

4. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
“The runway behind you, the air above you, the fuel in the hose — does you no good.”

5. If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?
“Give all the glory to the Lord for he is the reason we get to do what we do.” ✝️

Thanks for getting to know this week’s pilot! See you next time, and blue skies until then!✈️🌎🌤️

🛫Runway Rundown - Runway Lights🛬

Why are runway lights different colors?💡

Runway lights use different colors to give pilots important information, especially at night or in low visibility.

🟢 Green lights mark the beginning of the runway (where landing starts).
🔴 Red lights mark the end of the runway.
⚪ White lights line the edges of the runway.
🟡 Yellow lights near the end of some runways warn pilots they’re approaching the last portion of the runway.

These colors provide quick visual cues that help pilots maintain orientation and make safe takeoffs and landings—day or night.

Did you know? Some runway edge lights change from white to yellow during the last 2,000 feet of the runway (or the last half of the runway on shorter runways), giving pilots an extra reminder that the runway is ending. 🌎🌤️🚨✨

✈️Meet the Pilot Monday✈️

This week we’re introducing Scott Baker, 38, from Hahira, GA! Scott has been a pilot for 11 years and is married to Brittany. Together, they have two daughters, Alli Kate and Adalyn. ❤️

Scott is truly one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet and is always willing to lend a hand and help whenever he’s needed. When he’s not flying, you’ll most likely find him outside enjoying the great outdoors.

And we can’t forget one very important fact about Scott… he does NOT like bologna. 😂🥪 We won’t hold it against him… but we might question his judgment a little. Let’s learn a little more about Scott!

1. What inspired you to become a pilot?
“My parents were prior military growing up. We were always around aviation in some way. I ultimately saw the airport as a secretive place that I wanted to be a part of.”

2. What is your favorite part of the job?
“Exposing someone who isn’t a pilot to the peace, freedom, and joy that flying offers. Seeing people smile during the flight is pure joy.”

3. What three items do you always have in your flight bag?
“phone, bottle of water, and oatmeal cream-pie”

4. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
“The choices you make and the way you act when nobody is watching reveal your true character.”

5. If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?
“Take pride in earning the right to be or do what you want in life or career.”

We’re happy to have Scott as our featured pilot this week! ✈️ Check back next week, blue skies until then!☀️

Have you ever seen our airport from this perspective? ✈️🌅 Here’s a bird’s-eye view of the airport, surrounded by the fields and community we’re proud to call home. We may be a little biased, but we think it looks pretty good from up here!🙌🏼

🛫Runway Rundown - The Phonetic Alphabet

Pilots use the NATO phonetic alphabet—words like Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta—to make radio communication clear and reduce misunderstandings.

For example, instead of saying “B”, which can sound like “D,” “P,” “V,” or “E” over a noisy radio, a pilot says “Bravo.”🅱️

This is especially important because radio transmissions can be affected by static, accents, engine noise, or weak signals. Using standardized words helps ensure everyone hears the same message, improving safety.

Another example:
"Cessna Seven Alpha Bravo, turn to heading zero four zero, climb and maintain one niner thousand."
Breakdown:
- Cessna Seven Alpha Bravo: The call sign for the specific airplane. (Cessna 7AB)
- Turn to heading zero four zero: Turn the airplane to fly toward a compass heading of 40 degrees (northeast).
- Climb and maintain one niner thousand: Fly upward until reaching 19,000 feet and stay at that altitude.

✈️ Meet the Pilot Monday ✈️

This week’s featured pilot is Dan McLeod!

At 76 years young, Dan has been flying for an amazing 49 years—that’s nearly five decades of taking to the skies!

Dan is the proud husband to Janie, dad to Jay, and Poppy to Sims. When he’s not in the cockpit, you’ll probably find him cheering on the Ole Miss Rebels, perfecting his golf game, or tackling the latest honey-do list at home (whether he volunteered for it or not 😉).

We asked Dan a few questions about his aviation journey and what flying means to him. Here’s what he had to say.

1. What inspired you to become a pilot?
Travel to save time because of limited time off early in my career.

2. What has been your most memorable flight?
On an instrument flight IFR in rain and clouds, I developed engine issues and decided to land in a bean field.

3. If you could fly any aircraft, past or present, what would it be?
Stearman Biplane

4. Sunrise or sunset flights?
I prefer sunset flights - more colors.

5. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
The only thing you have when you depart this life is your name, so make it a good name.

We’re grateful for Dan’s years of dedication to aviation and are excited to shine the spotlight on him this week. Be sure to say hello if you see him around the airport, and check back next Monday! Blue skies until then!✈️☁️🌎

🛫Runway Rundown - Wind Tee

A wind tee (sometimes called a tetrahedron) is a visual wind indicator used at airports. It is a large, cone-shaped or T-shaped device mounted on a pivot that points into the wind.

What it does:

* Shows the direction the wind is coming from.
* Helps pilots determine which runway is most favorable for takeoff and landing.
* Is especially useful at smaller airports (like ours) where pilots may not have access to a control tower.

A simple way to remember it: pilots take off and land into the wind, and a wind tee helps them quickly see which direction the wind is blowing. ✈️
