Medullary rays! So, I’m working on a Herreshoff 12 1/2. I just put on new garboards and now I’m repairing the stem to keel joint, which is showing its age at 98. As I chipped away the decayed wood I noticed a really cool texture where some waste split away. I am no dendrologist but it looks like it’s free standing medullary rays. They look like they have been wicking some of the various paint colors through the decades. In the second to last photo you can see what it looks like once cut smooth down to half decent wood. The dark vertical slashes are the rays and the wide horizontal lines are the growth rings. These rays are one of my favorite features of quartersawn white oak. You can see an example of varnished quartersawn white oak in the final photo (please excuse my toe - it was the first picture I found in my phone)

It’s a good reminder that spring is right around the corner when the cods are stacking up! Also a good reminder to put a scrap barrel behind the bandsaw before starting. They never all fall in, but saves some cleanup time.

Merry Christmas from Redd’s Pond Boatworks! Introducing “Doolittle”, A 12’ boat of my own design dubbed a Sunnyside Skiff. The idea began a few years ago in conversation with my wife Eliza. She wanted us to have a small boat to explore our local waters with our kids under sail or oar. We doodled, we brainstormed, but I had a hard time finding the time and space to put it together. Last winter I finally found time to sit at my drafting table and put down lines. The building has been in fits and starts over the last year around customers’ projects. The idea of a birthday present came and went last spring, but here we are at Christmas eve and we were able to find the time to have a Redds Pond christening!

Through the winter I will build a sail rig, and electric rudder to power her in addition to oars. Once we have gotten a chance to do some shakedowns, I’ll make any adjustments to the design and consider marketing, but for now this boatbuilder’s wife -and family - gets to enjoy her.

New shop dog post! Juniper joined our family last week, and today she got to try out her shop dog duties. Solar charging at the loft door perch, watching for birds on the way to the transfer station, low tide walks out to Browns Island with Liza, and keeping the kids giggling in the back seat. She’s a quick study, we’re so lucky to have found her.
