✈️ You never know what will land at McAlester Regional Airport.

Today’s visitor was a 1946 military training aircraft that began its journey in Ohio, stopped in Missouri yesterday and McAlester today, with Dallas next on the itinerary.

Its final destination is Hawaii, where it will be reassembled, placed on display at a museum and flown around the islands to help preserve aviation history for future generations.

Thanks for making McAlester part of the journey!

✈️ Airport 101: What is general aviation?

When many people hear the word “aviation,” they think of large airlines and crowded passenger terminals. But much of aviation looks very different.

General aviation includes many civil aviation activities outside scheduled airline service, such as:
🛩️ Personal and recreational flying
🏢 Business aviation
🎓 Flight instruction
🚁 Helicopter operations
🚑 Emergency and public-service flights
🔧 Aircraft testing and maintenance

Community airports such as McAlester Regional Airport help connect these activities with the communities they serve.

An airport does not need scheduled airline service to remain active or valuable.

✈️ Airport 101: What counts as an aircraft operation?

Airport activity is commonly measured in operations. One takeoff counts as one operation, and one landing counts as another.

From February through June, McAlester Regional Airport recorded:
🛬 1,502 arrivals
🛫 1,572 departures
✈️ 3,074 total aircraft operations

These included a variety of general aviation activity, from local flights and flight training to visiting and business aircraft.

Tracking operations helps airports understand how facilities are being used and plan for future maintenance, safety improvements and infrastructure needs.

The installation of the Great Seal of the State of Oklahoma is one of the final touches on the McAlester Regional Airport terminal, giving the building a clean, distinguished look that reflects the pride we have in our community.
