FMCSA is preparing a new study that could reshape how detention time affects truck drivers’ Hours of Service.

The agency plans to test whether qualifying drivers should be allowed to pause their 14-hour driving window for up to three hours. The pause could include off-duty time, sleeper-berth time, or certain on-duty/not-driving time at a shipper or receiver.

For drivers who spend hours waiting to load or unload, that could eventually mean more flexibility after long dock delays. However, FMCSA is also studying whether a longer effective workday could increase fatigue or create new pressure on drivers.

This is not a new HOS rule. The research is meant to help FMCSA decide whether this type of flexibility can be used safely in the future.

Drivers can do EVERYTHING right for 11 HOURS…

Then suddenly become the problem because America forgot to build somewhere for them to PARK.

The clock keeps dropping.

15 minutes.

6 minutes.

ONE minute.

Meanwhile…

Truck stops are FULL.

Rest areas are PACKED.

Legal parking is GONE.

Now the driver gets two terrible choices.

Keep moving and risk an hours-of-service violation…

Or park somewhere that's not safe.

America keeps building highways to move more FREIGHT…

But somehow forgets every one of those trucks eventually has to STOP.

Maybe it's time to safely extend more on-ramps and off-ramps with designated truck parking where possible.

Because drivers shouldn't be punished for running out of HOURS…
