Travelers! If you see a heavy emergency response at the Murray Field Airport in Eureka on Thursday, May 21, don’t panic! Humboldt Bay Fire will be conducting a training exercise. Learn more in the post below.

Heads up, Humboldt! The Humboldt County Department of Aviation would like to inform the community that Humboldt Bay Fire will hold a multi-casualty incident training exercise on Thursday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The exercise will take place at Murray Field Airport, located on Airport Road in Eureka. ✈

The training exercise will simulate an airplane crash with multiple casualties, giving Humboldt Bay Fire firefighter/EMTs and firefighter/paramedics the opportunity to practice mass casualty response, practice executing the North Coast Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Multi-Casualty Plan, perform triage and set up on-site treatment areas. In addition, Humboldt Bay Fire will work closely with local ambulance companies and Providence St. Joseph Hospital to coordinate the rapid transport of "injured" patients to area hospitals.

This exercise is necessary on an annual basis for Providence St. Joseph Hospital to maintain its designation as a local trauma center.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁
During the exercise, airport visitors, Highway 101 travelers and those in the vicinity of Murray Field should expect to see emergency fire vehicles, ambulances, EMS aircraft and emergency personnel operating within a controlled area on airport property.

There are no planned street closures, and airport operations will not be impacted as a result of this training exercise.

The County of Humboldt’s Aviation Department is proud to partner with Humboldt Bay Fire to provide a location for this important training opportunity. For more information on the Humboldt County Department of Aviation, please visit FlyACV.com.

Heads up, travelers! The Humboldt County Department of Aviation will conduct a live fire aircraft rescue and firefighting training exercise at our airport on April 28 and 29, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Airport visitors and those in the surrounding area should expect to see fire in a controlled area on airport property and personnel responding to fight the fire. The controlled fire may be visible from surrounding roads, homes or by air, so please plan accordingly!

There are no planned street closures and airport operations will not be impacted as a result of this training exercise.

The emergency simulation is intended to provide a real-time, realistic experience of a fire incident and allow airport staff to practice together, assess emergency response procedures and solidify strong operational relationships.

For more information about ACV and the Department of Aviation, please visit FlyACV.com.

Heads up, Humboldt! The Humboldt County Department of Aviation will hold an aircraft rescue and firefighting training exercise on Tuesday, April 28 and Wednesday, April 29, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. It will take place at the California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport (ACV), located at 3561 Boeing Ave. in McKinleyville. ✈

Using propane-fueled props, the training exercise will simulate the conditions of a live fire emergency and staff will practice tactics and operate equipment used in aircraft rescue and firefighting operations. Live fire training gives staff the opportunity for hands-on, realistic practice to prepare for a real-life aircraft emergency.

During the exercise, airport visitors and those in the vicinity of ACV should expect to see fire in a controlled area on airport property and personnel responding to fight the fire. The fire may be visible from surrounding roads, homes or by air. Please plan accordingly.

There are no planned street closures and airport operations will not be impacted as a result of this two-day training exercise.

The Federal Aviation Administration requires all certified commercial airports to perform an aircraft rescue and training exercise every year. The purpose of this exercise is to train airport staff on how to respond to a fire emergency at ACV. The emergency simulation is intended to provide a real-time, realistic experience of a fire incident and allow staff to practice together, assess emergency response procedures and solidify strong operational relationships.

📰 COUNTY OF HUMBOLDT PRESS RELEASE: Justin Hopman, C.M., ACE, will be resigning as Humboldt County’s Director of Aviation, effective Friday, March 27. Hopman joined the county as Aviation Director on Jan. 5.

"After much reflection and discussion with my family, I have made the difficult decision to step away from my role as Humboldt County’s Aviation Director,” said Justin Hopman. “The needs and well-being of my family must always take priority. This decision was not easy to make, and I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity that was presented to me.”

The County of Humboldt thanks Hopman for his work and wishes him well in his future endeavors.

"While this outcome is not what we hoped for, we respect Justin's decision to prioritize what is best for his family," said Third District Supervisor and Board Chair Mike Wilson. "Aviation continues to be vital to Humboldt's connectivity and economic growth, and the Board remains committed to supporting the needs of the community and the Aviation Department."

Humboldt County's aviation system is experiencing transformative growth, with expanded air service at the California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport (ACV) creating more opportunities than ever for the community to connect with destinations near and far. As this remains an important priority for the county, the Board of Supervisors will continue investigating the best path forward while the search for a new Aviation Director begins.
