On May 7, 2026, our elementary building will be hosting a CERP (Comprehensive Emergency Response Plan) drill. We want to share this in advance so our community understands what’s happening and why it matters.

These drills are required and are an important part of keeping our students and staff safe. They allow us to practice how we would respond in a real emergency, identify areas for improvement, and ensure everyone knows their role.

This drill will involve collaboration with local emergency responders, including law enforcement, the ambulance district, and other safety personnel. Working together helps strengthen coordination and communication so we are fully prepared should a real situation ever occur.

Please know this is only a drill, and there is no cause for concern. You may see an increased presence of emergency vehicles and personnel at the school during this time.

Mock drills will take place at a later date at the secondary building as a part of the district's full-system readiness plan.

Some may have noticed the flashers are in full operation in front of the high school on HWY 54 again, what a blessing! They will run from 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. and again from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., asking drivers to reduce their speed to 40 mph.

One of the cool things I get to do in my job is get inside the classroom every now and then. Last week at Van-Far, I got to teach internet safety to grades 3-6. While talking about internet safety with my first class, I had a student raise their hand and tell me that they play Roblox and there are a lot of people who “creep” on there asking for personal information. From then on, I asked every class to raise their hands if they played online games such as Fortnite, Roblox, or Minecraft. Usually by the end of that question, about 95% of the students hands were raised. I then asked the students to raise their hand if they have had any experiences with people asking them their age, where they lived, or where they went to school. Every single class had at least one student who has had these questions asked of them.

I say all that for this. If you think it doesn’t happen to kids in our towns, you are unfortunately very mistaken. If your kids play on an online platform, make sure you are paying attention.

The attached website has A BUNCH of resources for you. Unfortunately it is not free for most, but it has great content and there are videos specifically made for each of these games and what to watch out for.

Please pay attention to your kids online. Chances are they are getting these questions asked of them or their friends. Be the safety and support your child needs by being present and up to date on the latest games! The internet and internet gaming isn’t all bad, if we can equip the kids with what they need to protect themselves with when (not if) the time comes.

It’s that time of year again. Kids are headed off to school and school buses are back out doing their best to get them to and from safely. Even though you may “know” the stop arm laws, please review the picture as a refresher. It takes less than a minute to review it, usually less than 2 minutes to stop, and saves a lifetime of pain for yourself and potential victim’s families.

While it’s not really broken down on how many kids are killed every year at bus stops, there is an average of 111 kids a year that are killed in school bus related incidents. Most of those kids are between the ages of 5 and 10. Let’s not let our communities become part of those statistics! Put your cell phones down (it’s the law), be aware of your surroundings, and drive slower.

I had the opportunity this week to travel to another ALERRT course. This one was designed to focus entirely on the solo response of the SRO to any type of attack or threat that may take place within a school or on school grounds. This is also a course that they are in the process of finishing the build on, and myself and other SRO's from Missouri and Alabama had the opportunity to participate in and help provide our insights to help better the course.

At the end of it all I can say this class truly lived up to my expectations of high quality training put on by ALERRT and their instructors. I am honored to have had the chance to help with ideas to finish build this course. I am proud to be able to be recognized as a certified instructor for several of their active attack response courses, and at the conclusion of this course was told I could bring it back to our area to provide the training to other SRO's.

The research this organization puts into their courses to ensure they are up to date and providing the most accurate information truly shows why they have become the National Standard for active attack training. Also, as opposed to some classes the majority of their course are hands on classes. This means only minimal time is spent in the classroom looking at a power point, and most of the course is spent actually doing scenarios and putting what is learned into action.

I look forward to continuing my relationship with ALERRT and bringing their courses to members of our office, surrounding agencies, and other first responder organizations within Audrain County.

I had the privilege to attend this training last week. While there I got to work and learn with many first responders from the Taney County area. This type of training centers around putting groups of people together who have not worked together before and ensuring they will be on the same page if an active attack were to happen. As a result of this training I now have the capability to bring this class back to Audrain County and teach all of our first responder agencies so if something were to happen fire, law enforcement, and EMS will be on the same page from the time the call goes out.
