The Aerospace Center for Excellence and the SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Expo are thrilled to endorse a new, specialty license plate that celebrates general aviation. The specialty plate colorfully highlights airplanes and a helicopter with a beautiful Florida backdrop. The new Florida “Support General Aviation” specialty license plate is on sale now via presale vouchers at each Florida County Tax Collectors Office.

! Let's look at fixed pitch vs. constant speed propellers.

Fixed pitch propellers have a single blade angle set at manufacture, optimizing performance for a specific speed range. They are simpler and lighter but are less efficient at varying speeds, making them ideal for cruising but less effective for takeoff and climb.

Constant speed propellers adjust their blade angle in flight to maintain optimal engine RPM across different speeds. This flexibility enhances efficiency during takeoff, climb, and cruise, offering better performance and quicker acceleration. However, they introduce additional complexity and weight.

As the blade angle increases, it requires more engine torque, causing the engine to slow down. Conversely, reducing the blade angle decreases the required torque, allowing the engine to speed up. This adjustment is managed by a governor that regulates oil flow to the propeller hub, ensuring the engine RPM remains steady despite changes in flight conditions.

! Let's talk about how a magneto works.

An aircraft magneto is an old but reliable device that generates the electricity needed to power your engine's spark plugs. It works by spinning a magnet near a coil of wire, creating a magnetic force. When the magnet spins fast enough, this force is released, generating a high voltage that creates a spark in the spark plug, which in turn fires the engine. Most general aviation planes have two magnetos, each powering one of two spark plugs in each cylinder, so the engine can keep running even if one magneto fails. The magneto system is popular because it’s self-contained and doesn’t rely on the aircraft's battery or electrical systems, ensuring the engine can run even if those systems fail.
