Hit the Road and Rediscover America’s Byways: September 22 Marks First Annual National Scenic Byway Day!

We are thrilled to declare September 22 as National Scenic Byway Day, a nationwide celebration inviting travelers to rediscover America’s most breathtaking, culturally rich, and story‑filled roads. This annual observance arrives during a milestone year for American travel heritage. 2026 marks America’s 250th birthday and the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Numbered Highway System, the historic grid that transformed early routes into the modern network of highways that shaped American mobility.

National Scenic Byway Day offers the perfect excuse to take the scenic route and explore the authentic character of the USA. Across the country, more than 1,000 designated scenic byways showcase the landscapes, cultures, and communities that define America.

National Scenic Byway Day is coming up next month! September 22 is the day to celebrate America's Byways.

🎉 Congratulations to the Savannah River National Scenic Byway!

At its August 18 meeting, Anderson County Council proudly proclaimed September 22, 2026, as National Scenic Byway Day in Anderson County!

Designated in 1998, the Savannah River National Scenic Byway stretches 110 miles from Oakway to Clarks Hill, showcasing the incredible beauty of South Carolina’s Freshwater Coast. Along the way are three major lakes and historic dams, welcoming towns and state parks, outstanding outdoor recreation, and the nationally recognized Green Pond Landing and Event Center.

This special designation celebrates not only the scenic, historic, cultural, recreational, archaeological, and natural treasures found along the Byway, but also the dedicated volunteers, organizations, businesses, local governments, and citizens who work to preserve and promote them.

👏 Congratulations to everyone who continues to make the Savannah River National Scenic Byway a source of pride for Anderson County and our region. We encourage residents and visitors alike to get out, explore, and celebrate our beautiful Byway!

Today in Transportation History, 1925: The First of the Regional Meetings to Help Define the U.S. Numbered Highway System is Held in San Francisco.

In April 1925, the first full-fledged meeting of the Joint Board on Interstate Highways took place at the headquarters of the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads (BPR) in Washington, D.C. This board, which was chaired by BPR’s chief Thomas H. MacDonald (1881-1957), had been established just a few weeks earlier to work on devising what ultimately became the U.S. Numbered Highway System.

Today in Transportation History, 1923: At Least 5,000 People Show Up to Watch a Five-Year-Old Future Mayor Open a Bridge Between New Hampshire and Maine.

A vertical-lift bridge crossing the Piscataqua River and connecting the city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with Badger’s Island in the town of Kittery, Maine, was formally inaugurated. This bridge was dedicated to the memory of American soldiers and sailors who had lost their lives during World War I just a few years earlier.

Our August byway showcase feature is Cayuga Lake Scenic Byway! Encircling the longest of New York's Finger Lakes, the 87-mile Cayuga Lake Scenic Byway offers a journey where glacial history, lakeside beauty, agriculture, and small towns come together around one remarkable body of water. Officially designated a New York State Scenic Byway in 2002, this scenic loop invites travelers to slow down, explore, and experience one of the Northeast's most diverse landscapes.
