Most visitors come to Spello to see the finished flower carpets. I'm so glad we arrived the day before to see them create it.
As beautiful as the Infiorate was, what captured my heart was watching the town prepare. Throughout the neighborhoods, giant "paint by number" designs stretched across the streets while families and friends gathered under tents with food and drinks, carefully pulling petals and filling baskets with colorful "paint." The atmosphere felt less like a festival and more like a neighborhood block party, full of community pride and tradition.
We spent the evening wandering Spello's flower-filled alleys, soaking in the energy and a gorgeous Umbrian sunset before returning the next morning for the unveiling.
The finished flower carpets were breathtaking. Knowing that these masterpieces had been created overnight made them even more impressive. The artists looked exhausted, children were asleep on mattresses in the piazzas, and I couldn't help but smile thinking about the memories being made. Imagine growing up saying, "Remember when we stayed up all night making flower carpets?"
The crowds were enormous, but experiencing both the preparation and the finished artwork made our first visit to Spello unforgettable.
