After a decade of service, real-time signs along the METRO A Line corridor are getting replaced with brighter displays that will serve riders well for at least the next 10 years.

New LED screens are full-color, high-definition, and use less energy than the signs they replace.

Installation will continue over the summer before crews move to the METRO C Line corridor this fall. Signs along Nicollet Mall and the METRO Orange Line will be replaced in the future.

Please join us on Saturday, June 13, as we celebrate the METRO A Line’s 10-year anniversary at Mattocks Park, just a few blocks from the Snelling & Randolph Station, among the first locations to get a new sign.

We’ll be at the park from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with pastries and giveaways, including a limited supply of re-printed posters from the A Line’s opening.

Olivia Jean Bignall thought she wanted to become a teacher — until she stepped into the classroom. “I left every day with a migraine,” she said. “It just wasn’t the right fit for me.”

When she started thinking about what to do next, the answer was closer than she realized.
Growing up, Olivia Jean was always around vehicles and machinery. Her family runs a body shop up north, and while she felt comfortable in that environment, she never pictured herself working in the industry professionally.

“It was kind of viewed as something only my male family members did,” Olivia Jean said. “Then I saw the apprenticeship and thought, ‘I could totally do that.’”

Now training to become a mechanic through a three-year apprenticeship program, Olivia Jean says she’s finally found the kind of work that fits her. “Compared to teaching, it’s a lot quieter and more focused,” she said. “A lot of the work is really about solving problems on your own.”

That mix of independence and teamwork is one of the things she enjoys most. “I like to talk, but I’m not always the biggest people person,” Olivia Jean said. “This kind of work gives you both.”
Still early in the program, Olivia Jean has especially enjoyed brake work and is beginning to learn more about engines and powertrain systems. “It feels like a really big puzzle,” she said.

Looking back, the transition now feels natural. “I’m having a lot of fun,” Olivia Jean said. “This feels much more like the type of work I was looking for.”

Apprentice applications are expected to open again later this summer. If you’ve already got the experience you need, learn more and apply on our website: https://www.metrotransit.org/mechanic-hiring

Minneapolis residents Libby and Anders love living near the METRO Blue Line’s 38th Street Station and using the train and bus for as many of their trips as possible.

When they made plans to exchange vows at Bde Psín/Lake Hiawatha, they knew they wanted to make transit a part of their big day, encouraging their invited guests to share the ride.

As a Route 22 bus rolled up to their stop after the ceremony concluded on Saturday, the overhead sign flipped to ”JUST MARRIED,” and the wedding party rode back to the couple’s home to continue celebrating, pausing briefly for wedding day photos.

Congrats to these NUMTOT newlyweds, and THANK YOU for making us a part of your special day!
