I steered my clients away from Santorini.

Not because it isn't a beautiful destination. But because it wasn't the right destination for them.

When you're planning your Europe adventure, where you travel isn't about the destination that is the most popular or the most beautiful. It's about finding the destination that works for you.

Not that any of these European cities are bad. They are worth ONE trip.

Top European places I wouldn’t go back to

1. Amsterdam - The smell of w**d on the streets and almost getting run off the road by bikers wasn’t fun. But the Heineken experience made my time there.

2. Santorini - Expensive, touristy and crowded. Beautiful place, but once was enough.

3. Rome - First time there 12 years ago and it was an amazing time. But it’s changed and not for the better.

4. Oslo - Expensive and uninspiring city. The rest of Norway on the other hand is 😍

5. Vienna - I had some really good food and beer in Vienna. But once was enough to see what I wanted to.

Travel fatigue from adding too many European cities to an itinerary is something not enough travelers understand.

Here's what I tell my clients when putting together their travel itinerary:

- Packing and unpacking too much is draining
- Large cities can be exhausting
- The countryside is worth visiting of any European country
- You need time to slow down

Not every European country is for everyone.

Some, like Ireland, will disappoint a certain type of traveler.

When I talk to people about where they want to go, it is about not only what they want to experience, but also their expectations there.

If reality isn't going to meet their expectations, we'll talk about it and find a destination that will.

Rome for some reason is one of those dividing line cities in Europe.

Some travelers can’t get enough of it, while others find it miserable.

I’ve been on both sides. The first time I went I absolutely loved it. When I went 11 years later I thought it was kinda “meh”

What it comes down to is expectations and travel desires.

If you want to explore ancient history, view beautiful artwork, and taste Italian culinary delights and don’t mind hordes of other tourists, you’ll enjoy Rome.

But if getting an Instagram shot of yourself in front of the Trevi Fountain isn’t a priority, Rome might not be for you.

Too many people make vacation plans to Europe that go to the most crowded places and pack in as much as they can in as little time as possible.

They don't actually experience Europe; they just see it.

Then come back feeling like they didn't experience it.

But if you plan your trip around the experiences you want to feel, you'll leave without the regret.
