The airline has publicly cited a pilot shortage while asking a federal court to overturn a multimillion-dollar arbitration award compensating the instructor pilots who trained the very first officers and captains needed to help address that shortage.

Instructor pilots stepped up when they were needed. An independent arbitration board ruled they should be compensated for that work. ALPA is now defending that award in federal court.
