At Air Line Pilots Association 139th Executive Board meeting, MEC Chairman Capt. Sam Larson accepted an unanimously approved MCF grant to support our current contract negotiations and the upcoming joint negotiations with Allegiant Air. This week, the Sun Country ALPA Central Air Safety Committee attended ALPA’s 70th Air Safety Forum ✈️ alongside experts from around the globe.

For seven decades, the Air Safety Forum has brought together ALPA pilot volunteers, industry leaders, and government partners with a shared purpose: advancing aviation safety and security through collaboration, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement.

On June 25, a pilot was flying a single-engine general aviation aircraft over Illinois when she experienced an engine failure. During the emergency, she attempted to contact air traffic control but was unable to reach them. Captain Steve Farquhar, an ALPA Sun Country pilot operating nearby, heard her radio calls and recognized the situation. He responded, relayed her Mayday to air traffic control, and offered a calm voice and words of encouragement when she needed them most.

🎧 This is a portion of the actual ATC audio from that day—a powerful example of how pilots look out for one another in times of need.

For pilots, safety goes well beyond their own flight deck.

✈️ ALPA has approved a $2 million allocation to support Sun Country Airlines pilots through contract negotiations and the upcoming joint collective bargaining agreement process tied to the Sun Country–Allegiant merger. “Being part of ALPA means our pilot group does not have to navigate a merger of this magnitude alone.” — Capt. The airline has publicly cited a pilot shortage while asking a federal court to overturn a multimillion-dollar arbitration award compensating the instructor pilots who trained the very first officers and captains needed to help address that shortage.

Instructor pilots stepped up when they were needed. An independent arbitration board ruled they should be compensated for that work. ALPA is now defending that award in federal court.
