✈️ When your $10,000 airline tickets mysteriously disappear…

Our journey from Amsterdam to Cape Town was supposed to be the easy part of the trip. We had checked in with KLM the night before, had our boarding passes, and had even ordered our meals.

Then we got to the airport. 😳

Delta had somehow dropped our paid Amsterdam-to-Cape Town flight from our itinerary when we made an earlier flight change. KLM was operating the flight but couldn't fix a Delta-issued ticket—and there was no Delta representative at the airport.

After 90-minutes on hold, our only option was to purchase two new tickets at $5,000 each.

And then we had 20 minutes to check our luggage, clear security and customs, and get to the gate.

Thankfully, we had arrived three hours early. And thankfully, we had travel insurance, a good credit card, and a sense of humor. 🍷😂

🇳🇱 Amsterdam was just the beginning…

Our 29-day adventure is officially underway, and our first stop was Amsterdam. Even though we’ve visited before, this trip gave us a chance to experience the city in some new ways—from the historic Jewish Quarter and the Anne Frank House to traditional Dutch cuisine, a fabulous seafood dinner, and a food tour that had us eating our way through the city.

Of course, no trip is complete without a few unexpected moments… including realizing that we had left some rather important things sitting on our kitchen counter. 😉 Apparently, even an overplanner can use a good old-fashioned “mommy check”!

There’s something about a road trip that I’ve always loved — the freedom, the changing scenery, and the little surprises that happen between one stop and the next. Road trips have a way of slowing life down just enough to let you enjoy the journey, not just the destination.

And they’re one of my favorite ways to see the world through a camera lens, with so many moments along the way that feel worth capturing.

So this week and next, I’ll be sharing a few road trip ideas that might just tempt you to start dreaming a little bigger — the kind of trips that make you want to keep a map handy, a playlist ready, and a few open dates on the calendar. Some are scenic, some are delicious, and some are all about the joy of wandering, but each one has that wonderful “let’s go see where the road takes us” feeling.

First up: the Pacific Coast Highway. This is one of those drives that really does live up to the daydream. With the ocean on one side, cliffs on the other, and endless places to stop and soak it all in, it’s the kind of road trip that reminds you the journey can be every bit as enjoyable as the destination.

Next, Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles brings all the nostalgia, character, and classic Americana you could want in a road trip. Think quirky stops, old-school diners, and the kind of adventure that feels both iconic and personal.

I’ll also be sharing ideas like Phoenix to the Grand Canyon, the Florida Keys, and Maine’s Lobster Trail — each with its own rhythm, scenery, and sense of discovery.

Road trips have a way of leaving an impression, whether it’s the views, the food, the pace, or simply the feeling of being out on the open road. I hope these ideas inspire you to start dreaming a little bigger.

Jet lag and I have a long-running relationship, and honestly, it is not my favorite travel companion.
