Look up at the stars, the Perseid meteor shower is here! ☄️
Popularly considered the best meteor shower of the year, the Perseids will peak tomorrow night through Sunday! The Perseids occur every year in mid-August and are famous for their prolific meteors. In the right conditions, up to 100 meteors per hour can be viewed during this shower!
The hours between midnight and sunrise are the best time to scan the sky to catch this classic summertime meteor shower. In South Florida, skies may be partly cloudy but don't despair! There's always a chance for a break in the clouds, even if only for a few minutes.
Here are a few viewing tips to help you get out and witness this cosmic phenomenon:
Watch from an area as dark as possible. Everglades NP is a great place to get away from light pollution. We suggest the Long Pine Key and the Flamingo areas of the park.
Fix your gaze about halfway up the sky; more activity is visible at lower elevations.
Give yourself a viewing window of at least an hour as these celestial displays are variable throughout the night.
Please use a red flashlight when necessary, as white light can be disruptive and harmful to wildlife and reduces your own night vision.
