The $700,000 Pilot Year

Driven by strong demand, union pressure, and a persistent pilot shortage, U.S. airline pilot pay has surged in recent years. Senior captains on wide‑body jets can now earn $400,000–$500,000 annually, with top earners approaching $700,000 in high‑demand situations. Major collective bargaining agreements—including Delta’s 34% cumulative raise, United’s ~40% increase, and Southwest’s nearly 50% raise by 2028—have reset industry pay scales. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for airline pilots, copilots, and flight engineers reached $226,600 in May 2024, up from about $127,820 in 2016. While these figures reflect seniority, aircraft type, and overtime, they underscore a historic shift in pilot compensation and the high value airlines now place on experienced flight crews.

Alaska Airlines is taking another big step in San Diego. The carrier has announced plans to open its first pilot base at San Diego International Airport, with a goal of stationing up to 250 captains and first officers there. The base is set to go live on June 1 next year. Internal notices say the first phase will staff about 150 pilots, and an application window for roughly 80 captain and 70 first officer positions will run from December 15 to December 28, with final assignments due on January 6. Alaska says the move will make it easier to staff flights that start and end in San Diego instead of flying pilots in from other cities.

The airline will also hire about 90 new first officers in the first quarter of 2026 to support its wider network, though not all of them will be based in San Diego. A second phase later in 2026 is expected to add around 100 more pilots to the new base. Executives say San Diego is now the fastest growing hub in the Alaska network, with about eighty percent capacity growth between 2023 and the schedule planned for next year, including fourteen new routes. They also acknowledge that building up San Diego will mean some pilot reductions or transfers at other western bases like Seattle, Portland, Anchorage, San Francisco and Los Angeles, though those pilots would remain within the company.

For travelers in Southern California, the new base is another sign that Alaska sees San Diego as a long term growth market where it wants to challenge Southwest. Alaska already leads the airport in number of nonstop destinations, and analysts say a local pilot base should help improve reliability by cutting down on delays caused by crews arriving late from other cities. While the new base does not automatically mean new routes on day one, it gives Alaska more flexibility to add flights over time and is a clear signal that San Diego is moving closer to the center of the airline’s West Coast strategy.

We are thrilled to share the addition of our newest program that will begin running during the 2026-2027 school year: Aviation/Pilot I & II. ✈
The Aviation/Pilot I & II Program, offered in partnership with D14 Aviation, is an accelerated, career-focused training pathway that builds students’ knowledge and skills across two years to prepare them for advanced aviation training and future careers as commercial, military, or general aviation pilots. Year One provides a strong foundation in aviation concepts, safety, regulations, aircraft systems, and industry structure, giving students a clear understanding of Commercial, Military, and General Aviation as well as the role of government and accident investigation. Year Two deepens this foundation through advanced, career-aligned studies in aviation weather theory, airspace systems, airport operations, navigation tools, regulations, and modern aircraft technologies, with an emphasis on real-world application, scenario-based learning, and decision-making. Together, the two-year curriculum equips students with the technical knowledge, safety mindset, and career readiness needed for a seamless transition into a training program, aviation-related postsecondary programs, and pilot certification pathways.
